Progressive Views: Voting, A Privilege and A Right

by Kevin Henning, KCDP Chair
for the “Progressive Views” column, Boerne Star, October 25, 2019

Each of us who votes can make a huge difference in the future of our city, county, state and country. How? First, get registered to vote. Then learn about the issues and candidates. Finally, vote in every election. This newspaper is an excellent source for information on elections, local candidates and issues.

To learn about the issues and candidates, you can attend local government and informational meetings, talk with friends and associates, read newspapers or go on the internet. To get started, why not attend the monthly Boerne Area Democrats meeting? It is the second Thursday of the month and is announced in this paper. Also, here are several websites that can educate and let you know where and how to get informed:

We should all be excited that countywide voting will be implemented in the November 5, 2019 Amendment election. This means that on election day, you can vote in any polling place in the county, not just in your precinct. Typically, this election has very low (less than 10%) turnout so please study the Amendments and get out and vote. Here’s a link with details on when and where to vote in November Amendment elections:   www.co.kendall.tx.us/page/Elections.current.november

Notes from the Chair:

RE: Office Update

As you probably have heard, KCDP and BAD have leased a full time Boerne office. It is located at 518 East Blanco St. next to and behind Mary’s Taco. You enter from the rear door. Signage is ordered and should be up by the end of the week. We are currently painting and outfitting the office.

We are in pretty good shape with equipment and furniture for the office but could use a few big items. A 36” or larger flat screen TV and a full-size refrigerator are two items on the top of the list. We also need some office partitions and an entry desk or table.

The main purpose of the office is for meetings, events, registering voters, "get out the vote" activities and to let the community know the Democratic Party is alive and well in Kendall County and surrounding areas.  We plan to have regular office hours after the holidays and will be soliciting office volunteers in January.

We have raised the money to pay the monthly rent and operating costs for the office from recurring contributions. We need more help to fund the office's outfitting, our voter registration activities, and "get out the vote" efforts in 2020.

Our first event will be a grand opening party tentatively set for November 8. Details will be out later this week.

Thank you for your past support. Your continued help will be essential to turning Texas Blue.

Seeking: Office Staffing Coordinator

Now that we’ve leased our new office space, we are seeking someone to serve as Office Staffing Coordinator. Duties include:

  • Scheduling volunteers to work during all office open-hours and finding substitutes when needed
  • Managing requests for use of office space for meetings, phone banks, etc. (using an online tool called Skedda)
  • Coordinating any “special requests” with Deputy Party Chair Laura Bray

The Office Staffing Coordinator does * not * have to be present during all office open-hours; he/she just needs to make sure * someone * is there. Training will be provided. Regular office hours (days/times TBD) will commence in January.

If you’re interested or for more details, contact Laura Bray email
