Dear Avon Lake UCC Community,
In the midst of a difficult week, let me share some good news. I received an email this week informing me that Avon Lake United Church of Christ has been named as the "Advocate of the Year" for Neighborhood Alliance in Lorain County. Neighborhood Alliance is a social service
agency that serves the needs of those who are homeless and hungry; it is the parent organization of the Haven Center homeless shelter, one of our mission partners. My thanks to everyone at ALUCC who has supported the work of Haven Center by donating to the food drive, contributing or volunteer at the Thrift Shop, or serving a meal. Special thanks to our Mission Team for their close ongoing partnership with Haven Center, and to Rich General who has written and been awarded two grants from the Living Water Association for Haven Center. Extra special thanks to Dorothy Henderson and Mary Pease and their entire team of volunteers for coordinating monthly meals for Haven Center, year in and year out. Since COVID-19, Kim Krock has been coordinating weekly meals to Haven Center. If you'd like to support her work, please
go to this sign-up or read below.
Have you ever considered donating plasma? One of our members wrote me this morning, explaining the extreme shortage of plasma. Doctors are treating COVID-19 patients with antibodies obtained through plasma donations. But people with primary immune deficiency (like the member who wrote me) also need regular antibodies. The closest location for donation is
255 Midway Blvd, Elyria, OH 44035.
This is one of those weeks when many of us would really be looking forward to in-person worship. In times of crisis, tragedy and turmoil, worship is both a comfort and a source of strength. In the past, after so many tumultuous events, we have gathered in our sanctuary to sing and pray together, and we have felt encouraged by one another's presence, by remembering that we are not alone. We have welcomed one another's hugs, handshakes and smiles. We cannot be together physically, but we are working hard to prepare a worship service that will still be uplifting for these days. I will tell you more about Sunday's worship in the Saturday email.
Until then, I wish you blessings of health and peace,
Kelly

Congratulations Chief Mark Spaetzel!
ALUCC member, Mark Spaetzel officially retired Monday after serving with the Bay Village police department for 35 years.
Mark, his wife Chris, and their 3 children held a retirement parade in front of the church Friday afternoon. On Monday, the City of Bay Village dedicated this stone bench in Mark's honor.
This article on Mark was also featured in West Life and includes a photo and comments about involvement with ALUCC and our mission trips.

ALUCC will partner again this summer with Love INC in their Clothe-a-Kid program. This year we have the opportunity to provide for families who may need help now more than ever.
Love INC has committed to helping 674 children in Lorain County by providing new clothing for the upcoming school year.
The Mission Team needs shoppers and donations!!! Shoppers will receive shopping information mid-July and orders are typically between $75-$100. Orders can be shared!
There are 3 ways you can help!
- You can shop and purchase the clothing for a child.
- You can make a donation and we will shop for you
- You can shop with donated funds.
or contact the church office at 440-933-3241 to help us with this important mission project.
