Message from the Vice President

Dr. Scott with Student Affairs delegation at UNM Taos.

Dear Student Affairs Colleagues,

Welcome back! We are now just eight short weeks from commencement and entering one of the busiest and most critical times of the year, preparing students to meet the challenges of the spring semester, participate as engaged leaders and community members, and for some, take the next step of graduating.

Just yesterday, a delegation from Student Affairs visited the Taos Campus with our professional development committee to learn more about how they’re serving students and to ideate on how we can strengthen our bonds even more than they are now. It was a pleasure to spend a day on their beautiful campus rich with student-centered practice and community. I want to ensure that your calendar is marked for another important Professional Development Committee offering, the Student Affairs Professional Development Day, taking place on Wednesday, April 2 in the Student Union Building. With such robust offerings, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Finally, please be sure to nominate an outstanding colleague or department for a Louie Award this year. The annual tradition of the Louie Awards helps us connect and celebrate the year as a division and recognize some of the outstanding work we do. This year’s event is sure to a blast.

With appreciation,

Eric

Celebrate Farmworkers Awareness Week with CAMP

This week, we join the national movement in celebrating Farmworker Awareness Week—both across the country and right here at UNM.

Here are some important facts you should know:

Farmworkers feed the world.

Roughly 85% of our fresh fruits and vegetables are handpicked by an estimated 2.5–3 million men, women, and children working in U.S. fields. Farmworkers labor in every state—including New Mexico—yet remain largely invisible. Many still endure inhumane conditions.

Asian American Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC) Moves, Hires Program Manager

After a nearly two-year building renovation process, the Asian American Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC) recently moved into its new location in Room 1064 of Mesa Vista Hall. The AAPIRC Team is working diligently with a number of campus partners to get fully settled in and create a welcoming space where all UNM students can connect, relax, and build a sense of community.

The new AAPIRC space offers a computer lab, FREE printing, meeting accommodations for chartered student organizations use, a small classroom-style gathering area, and a kitchenette featuring a refrigerator and microwave. Students can also enjoy the private meditation room for quiet reflection and prayer as well as a comfortable lounge to unwind and socialize.

In addition to transitioning into a new physical environment, AAPIRC also welcomed Aaron Tuioti-Mariner as the center’s inaugural Program Manager on March 17. Aaron joined the UNM community last year as the sales and program manager for the Student Union Building before taking on the new AAPIRC role. Prior to moving to New Mexico, Aaron spent 15 years in higher education at Adams State University where he held various roles including graduate coordinator, program chair, academic advisor, assistant professor, and assistant football coach.
