Message from the Vice President

Dear Student Affairs Colleagues,

Spring seems to be blowing in and out of New Mexico every couple of days, but the trees are greening up and the flowers are blooming nonetheless. Yesterday, I had the joy of joining the Office of Sustainability to celebrate UNM’s official designation as a Tree Campus by the Arbor Day Foundation. With over 5,000 trees, UNM is a designated arboretum and an incredible oasis of nature in the center of our city. I feel grateful every day that I am able to spend on our beautiful campus and am ever appreciative of our incredible grounds and landscaping crews for sustaining such an incredible environment for us to live, work, and learn in.

I’m also in the early stages of planting my own garden which has been a pleasant respite from the fast pace that the spring semester often entails. I hope that you each are working to reserve time for your own hobbies and recentering opportunities as we navigate the regular and unexpected challenges that we face in our work.

Some important initiatives in the division this month focus on April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Division of Student Affairs hosts two units, the Women's Resource Center and the LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center which are set up to provide confidential advocacy services at UNM. Each of these units leads with integrity and seamlessly bridges prevention, education, and support, which are elements that will be central our strategic plan relating to campus climate and student support. Thank you to the staff in these units and all those who collaborate on these critical issues.

With appreciation,

Eric

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Every April, the LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center joins organizations around the country in prevention efforts and educational campaigns in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). SAAM kicked off yesterday with a Day of Action Consent Fair, and people were asked to wear teal to raise awareness and in support of survivors of sexual violence.
