TACKLING TOUGH TOPICS

This Sunday, August 16, from 4 to 5:30 pm, Piedmont Community Church will virtually host the second in a series of Living Room Conversations. At a time of increasing polarization in our society, when so many seem to talk past each other, we invite you to join in a new way of listening, sharing and learning in conversation.

Our focus this time is 'Freedom.'

Freedom is a key concept in America’s founding documents. We are proud to be a free people. That said, there are legitimate differing interpretations of what freedom means. Join us as we listen to, and learn from, one another on this important topic.

Each Living Room Conversation is guided by a host - a Piedmont Church member - trained in facilitating respectful, open conversation. The purpose is not to change minds, but to enable participants to gain an appreciation of the bases for ideas with which they may disagree, and draw us together as a community of faith that values deep and thoughtful discourse.

We will be using the Zoom platform for this conversation. If you’d like to take part, please sign up no later than noon on Sunday, August 16.

You will receive by email containing a Zoom link and a PDF document to help you prepare for the conversation. For more information, contact Dr. Don Ashburn at: [email protected]
WORSHIP ONLINE

THIS WEEK IN WORSHIP, we meet Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. Dr. William McNabb shares a story of the ultimate test of faith, church member Sara Smith Hirsch provides our liturgy and Dr. Stephen Main accompanies baritone Michael Orlinsky in 'Be Not Afraid.'
We are pleased to announce that Piedmont Church has been given two substantial financial gifts this week. Both are anonymous.

A church member has donated $50,000 in stock to the Piedmont Church Endowment Fund in honor of Dr. William McNabb.

Also, a foundation, having given substantial grants and donations in the past, has donated $100,000 to the church in an unrestricted gift.

Piedmont Church is grateful for these gifts, and all who continue to support the church through online giving and pledge.

WEDNESDAY MORNING
BIBLE STUDY

Join Dr. Don Ashburn for a study of the New
Testament Gospel of Mark. We’ll meet weekly online from 10 - 11 am. We’ll be using the Zoom online platform.

In the study, we’ll read the text out loud and then discuss its meaning, its original context as well as how it relates to our lives today.

To participate, you’ll need access to a computer or mobile device with audio and visual capabilities. You can have your own copy of the Bible, or read the text as it’s shared onscreen. There’s no homework, and no expectation that you’ve studied the Bible before.

Just join us, and invite your friends! Contact Dr. Ashburn at [email protected]. The link for joining the Bible Study online is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82910582013. It’ll be the same link each week.

Welcome to our new program, Digging into Foundations of Faith.

As we start our new school year we will be Digging into Foundations of Faith. We will be learning what it means to be a Christian. We will explore what the Bible reveals about who God is and how God sees us, how we fit in God’s family, and how we live the Christian life. As we study core concepts of Christianity, we will gain a solid framework for our own relationship with Jesus.

Some of the lessons include: Moses and the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1-4:17), God Tells Job About His Creation (Job 38039; Psalm 8), and Jesus Feeds 5,000 (Matthew 14:13021).

Please look for the links to weekly lessons in The Messenger and in Leslie's weekly emails.

SERVICE OPPPORTUNITIES
SERVE A VULNERABLE COMMUNITY

Primera Iglesia Presbiteriana Hispana (PIPH) serves the Spanish-speaking community in East Oakland, near High St. and Foothill Blvd. Many families have recently lost their jobs and are not eligible, or not able, to collect unemployment or other public assistance. Many of these families also live in housing situations that are very crowded, and are fertile grounds for the spread of COVID-19. Already, 20 members of their congregation have been diagnosed with or have had Coronavirus.

PIPH is addressing this urgent need by collecting food and gift cards to distribute to families every Saturday – in a typical week they serve about 40 families. It is a very tangible, and needed, way to help our brothers and sisters in Christ and in our broader community.

Members of Piedmont Community church came together last month and raised over $600 in food assistance, which was quickly distributed to make a real difference in the lives of these families. We’d like to do more!

You can help by
  • donating food (biggest needs are basics like rice, beans, cooking oil, tortillas, vegetables, fruits, cereal, juice, pasta, sauce ),
  • donating Safeway gift cards in the amount of $25, or
  • donating a check (with Covid19 Families noted on the check).

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to:

DIGITAL DAY OF SERVICE

Project Peace has reimagined the Day of Service into a remote experience by highlighting actionable needs of our community partners and providing spiritual resources.

With prayers, wisdom from partners, and actions that can be integrated into our lives, we can walk forwards together with hope.
