PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE___________________________
|
|
Dear Friends,
My first draft of this message focused on the usual suspects, namely, please renew your
|
|
|
Gil Blumenthal
|
membership, come to our August 23rd Kabbalat Shabbat service (open house, plus Oneg),
look at our new front doors and other noticeable building improvements, etc., etc.
Well folks, there is even better news to report! Last spring Kehillah applied for the 2019
Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). Led by Dan Sommer's efforts, Kehillah's application outlined tangible steps that needed to be taken to secure our facility, along with their costs. Prior to that, the Board, Rich Goldman and others met with representatives of state and local law enforcement, Homeland Security and others to assess our needs. All of these factors came together in the grant application and I am very proud to report that Kehillah will be receiving an award of $51,650. This award only covers hard costs. Other costs, such as our armed security presence, are not covered. This year's $200 security assessment will partially cover the cost of security. The balance will come from our operating budget. If you wish to contribute to help defer or completely cover that cost, please contact me immediately.
Securing a grant such as this is a very competitive process. There were 28 applicants in our area. Only 10 awards were granted. We must be diligent about how the money is spent and we will be. Our primary interest is the safety and security of our congregants and all who enter our sacred space. Reflecting on the dedication of those whose determination made this grant possible, two words immediately came to mind: We've arrived! Kehillah is no longer "new." We've completed our first decade and clearly have a presence in the Jewish community. We own our building and are accomplishing things that mature congregations do. With this in mind, I'm looking forward to an amazing year ahead.
A last reminder: As we approach the High Holy Days, please check your Kehillah Connections email weekly. There is much going on at Kehillah and we don't want you to miss it. As always, more to come ....
Gil

In Jewish life, one of our most meaningful roles is fulfilling
mitzvot
by helping each other when we are in need.
The Caring Committee of Congregation Kehillah works
as an extended family, to organize and mobilize aid
and
assistance for our community.
Our Caring Committee
- sends cards for simchas and milestones, including birthdays, anniversaries, and b'nai mitzvah
- visits the ailing at home or in the hospital
- shops for groceries or delivers meals
- makes phone calls
- participates in activities with the Social Action Committee.
|
Please email Scarlett Allison
(or call her at 949-510-3379) if you are interested in volun
teering
, if you have ideas for how we can further assist each other, or if you would like any of the above.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS

Trees in Israel
Sandra and John Krisch
, in memory of Isadore Truman
|
Did you know . . .
that it is customary to donate at the time of Yizkor or when Kaddish is recited in memory of a loved one? It is also customary to make a donation when given an aliyah (honor) during a service.
Jewish Philanthropy: The Concept of Tzedakah is a much-admired practice throughout the world. "In Jewish tradition, tzedakah requires the donor share his or her compassion and empathy along with the money. Judaism teaches the belief that donors benefit from tzedakah as much [as] or more than the recipients."
You can find out more about the roots and practices of Jewish philanthropy at Learning to Give.

|
|
Your donations in any amount are genuinely appreciated.
Please help support Congregation Kehillah by donating to Kehillah's various funds
-- to celebrate, honor, remember, give thanks, to assist, or simply to do tzedakah.
You can donate through our website in any amount or send a check. Congregation Kehlllah is a 501(c)(3) organization; donations are tax-exempt to the fullest extent allowable by law. (Please consult with your tax adviser.)

Here's another great way to support Kehillah:

and other wonderful news with your Kehillah family.
