THIS WEEK
WHERE DOES JEWISH WISDOM COME FROM?
Wednesday, July 8
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
via Zoom
Where does great Jewish wisdom come from? Well...one of the sources is  Pirke Avot,
actually a section of Talmud (Mishna, technically).  Pirke Avot , usually translated as 'Ethics of the Fathers' is a collection of short teachings by some of the early Rabbinic sages with a lot of wisdom packed in. There is a tradition that between Passover and Shavuot, each week we study a new chapter (six weeks between the two holidays, six chapters).  During our last Torah Talk session, we looked at chapter 4...and hardly got past the first few lines it was so jam-packed ('Who is wise? The one who learns from everyone? Who is rich? The one who is happy with his/her lot...) Next class we will be discussing chapters 1, 2 & 3.

A fast moving and uplifting class, great for those who are 'newbies' to Jewish texts.   RSVP  to Renee by 5:00 p.m. Monday, July 6th.  A Zoom link will be sent only to those who have attended the classes in the past. If you wish to participate, please email Renee for the link.

LOOKING AHEAD

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Yizkor YIZKOR BOOK

For the past few months we have all heard Rabbi say that she has 6.5 different scenarios in her head for how the High Holy Days will look this year. In an effort to stay ahead of ourselves, we are starting the Yizkor Book much earlier this year in hopes that we can get this into people's hands and homes (more on this later) prior to the High Holy Days beginning.

The Kehillah Yizkor Book, published every Yom Kippur, is a means to remember departed loved ones.  A donation of $18 per name is requested. Yizkor Book listings are open to non-members as well as members. We will be pleased to include the names of your loved ones. This book will be used for all Yizkor services throughout the year.

Please take a moment to fill out the form that was emailed to you and either mail it back to us with your payment or scan and email the form to Ellen Lerman  and make your payment online, here .

Here are other great ways to support Kehillah

Normally, we'd invite you to celebrate with an Oneg.
Sponsoring an Oneg is a great way to celebrate your lifecycle events and other wonderful news with your Kehillah family. For 2020, we are aiming to have every Oneg sponsored. To reserve your Oneg, please email Renee or call her at 602-369-7667.
But while we're currently not gathering, and you are (we hope!) spending most of your time at home during the next few weeks, remember to use Amazon Smile when you buy on Amazon.

We've raised $38.50 in donations through the Amazon Smile program between January 1 and March 31, 2020.

You can sign up for Amazon Smile and choose Congregation Kehillah as your charity. It's simple, costs nothing, and Amazon will donate a portion of your purchase price to Kehillah.

Here's how to sign up:

Visit  smile.amazon.com and select Congregation Kehillah
. That's it! After you're signed up, shop on Amazon by visiting smile.amazon.com (your Prime account goes with you) and continue as usual. The website  will remember you selected Congregation Kehillah, and every eligible purchase you make at  smile.amazon.com  will result in a donation.

ANOTHER WAY TO USE AMAZON SMILE!

Good news! AmazonSmile is now available in the Amazon Shopping app on iOS and Android mobile phones.

AmazonSmile customers can now support Congregation Kehillah in the Amazon shopping app on iOS and Android mobile phones! Simply follow these instructions to turn on AmazonSmile and start generating donations.
  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app on your device
  2. Go into the main menu of the Amazon Shopping app and tap into 'Settings'
  3. Tap 'AmazonSmile' and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

SOCIAL ACTION
REFUGEE AID

REFUGEE AID is a non-profit organization aiding people in our community during this crazy Covid-19 time and beyond!  Refugee Aid is a community based organization (they are a project of the 501C3  Southwest Heritage Foundation) that aids migrant communities and asylum seekers in the US and Mexico. For more information on this organization, please click here .  Refugee Aid is requesting donations (monetary & in-kind) as well as assistance with volunteering.   Some volunteer work does not include face to face contact. There  is something for everyone!!    Please click on this pdf to see what is needed.  Feel free to pass this information to friends and family.  Your networks are powerful!  It is also possible to sign up for weekly emails as some volunteering changes weekly.

SOJOURNER NEEDS...
The Center, which helps women escape abuse and domestic violence, is in desperate need of women's underwear, sizes 6, 7, and 8.  If you are able,  you can order these online at Amazon, and Sojourner and Kehillah will benefit. They can be sent to Sojourner Resource Center, 2330 E. Filmore Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

HEARTFELT APPRECIATION:
Dear Renee Joffe,

Please extend our heartfelt gratitude to Congregation Kehillah for their ongoing support. Packages of our most-needed items have been arriving at Sojourner Center. While the pandemic is forcing us to distance for safety, it cannot break the bonds that tie our community together. Even during these uncertain times, you remind us that we are not alone in our mission to overcome the impact of domestic violence, one life at a time. With your support, Sojourner Center continues to provide services and safety for survivors of domestic violence. I hope the days ahead bring you good health, peace and happiness. We appreciate all that you do.

Warmest regards,
Cheryl Hurd
Director of Community Engagement
Did you know . . .
that it is customary to donate at the time of Yizkor or when Kaddish is recited in memory of a loved one? It is also customary to make a donation when given an aliyah (honor) during a service.

Jewish Philanthropy: The Concept of Tzedakah is a much-admired practice throughout the world. "In Jewish tradition, tzedakah requires the donor share his or her compassion and empathy along with the money. Judaism teaches the belief that donors benefit from tzedakah as much [as] or more than the recipients."

You can find out more about the roots and practices of Jewish philanthropy at Learning to Give.

CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS ACT OF KINDNESS?

The Phoenix Holocaust Association  is sponsoring an initiative to provide meaningful gratitude to caregivers working in assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing facilities. Because of early fundraising success, we have e xpanded the program to cover four Greater Phoenix area facilities: The Palazzo, Belmont Village, Kivel Campus of Care, and Friendship Village Tempe.

Professional caregivers, including Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's), Home Health Aides (HHA's), and Personal Care Aides (PCA's), assist our elderly loved ones with bathing and bathroom functions, grooming, dressing, eating, mobility, and taking medications.  Caregivers provide intimate help to the people at greatest risk for contracting and dying of COVID-19.

It's past time to thank the less celebrated workers on the frontlines who, at great personal risk, quietly and diligently care for those who are most vulnerable. These dedicated caregivers are nothing short of heroes.

Our goal is to provide a $50 or more gift card to Albertson's-Safeway for every caregiver working at the four senior residential facilities mentoned above.

Help give back to those who give their all for our loved ones! The Phoenix Holocaust Association has launched an initiative that seeks to give every caregiver at four senior care communities a grocery gift card. Click here to donate.
