A NOTE FROM RABBI SHARFMAN
|
|
On the Fourth of July, we had a family conversation about celebrating our country and freedom while also pained that we are not living up to our promise, and the particularly abhorrent human tragedies currently experienced by children and adults at our border. My daughter asked what she could do. There are a number of groups providing assistance, but largely uncoordinated. I suggested that one thing we can all do is to write to our congressional members as they have the power to enact change. Below is what she wrote, along with links to reaching Representative Schweikert and Senators Sinema and McSally.
Ask them to visit a detention center and observe for themselves, and be sure to bring along diapers, toothbrushes and soap for distribution. How can their hearts not be moved?
Let me know if you want me to connect you with any groups/individuals providing services to those detained.
Rabbi
Dear Representative Schweikert,
I am deeply disturbed after seeing the images and videos of the women and children trapped within what appear to be human cages along our border with Mexico. It is impossible to see such images and not be moved by common human decency to do something to provide more humane living conditions and sanitary conditions for these people. It does not matter to me at this point about the politics of how they came to be in these cages; all I know is that it is not right or just or good for this to continue and as your constituent, I strongly urge you to remedy this situation as fast as possible. The United States is a great nation, and a great nation cannot stand by without remedying the deplorable living conditions of those trapped along our border. Please do all that you can to remedy this situation and urge your colleagues to do the same.

Did you know . . .
that it is customary to donate at the time of Yizkor or when Kaddish is recited in memory of a loved one? It is also customary to make a donation when given an aliyah (honor) during a service.
Jewish Philanthropy: The Concept of Tzedakah is a much-admired practice throughout the world. "In Jewish tradition, tzedakah requires the donor share his or her compassion and empathy along with the money. Judaism teaches the belief that donors benefit from tzedakah as much [as] or more than the recipients."
You can find out more about the roots and practices of Jewish philanthropy at Learning to Give.

Your donations in any amount are genuinely appreciated.
Please help support Congregation Kehillah by donating to Kehillah's various funds

You can donate through our website in any amount or send a check. Congregation Kehlllah is a 501(c)(3) organization; donations are tax-exempt to the fullest extent allowable by law. (Please consult with your tax adviser.)
