 WHERE DOES JEWISH WISDOM COME FROM?

Where does great Jewish wisdom come from? Well...one of the sources is
Pirke Avot,
actually a section of Talmud (Mishna, technically).
Pirke Avot
, usually translated as 'Ethics of the Fathers' is a collection of short teachings by some of the early Rabbinic sages with a lot of wisdom packed in. There is a tradition that between Passover and Shavuot, each week we study a new chapter (six weeks between the two holidays, six chapters). During our last Torah Talk session, we looked at chapter 4...and hardly got past the first few lines it was so jam-packed ('Who is wise? The one who learns from everyone? Who is rich? The one who is happy with his/her lot...) Next class we will be discussing chapters 1, 2 & 3.

fast moving and uplifting class, great for those who are 'newbies' to Jewish texts.

Did you know . . .
that it is customary to donate at the time of Yizkor or when Kaddish is recited in memory of a loved one? It is also customary to make a donation when given an aliyah (honor) during a service.
Jewish Philanthropy: The Concept of Tzedakah is a much-admired practice throughout the world. "In Jewish tradition, tzedakah requires the donor share his or her compassion and empathy along with the money. Judaism teaches the belief that donors benefit from tzedakah as much [as] or more than the recipients."

CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS ACT OF KINDNESS?
The Phoenix Holocaust Association
is sponsoring an initiative to provide meaningful gratitude to caregivers working in assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing facilities. Because of early fundraising success, we have e
xpanded the program to cover four Greater Phoenix area facilities: The Palazzo, Belmont Village, Kivel Campus of Care, and Friendship Village Tempe.
Professional caregivers, including Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's), Home Health Aides (HHA's), and Personal Care Aides (PCA's), assist our elderly loved ones with bathing and bathroom functions, grooming, dressing, eating, mobility, and taking medications. Caregivers provide intimate help to the people at greatest risk for contracting and dying of COVID-19.
It's past time to thank the less celebrated workers on the frontlines who, at great personal risk, quietly and diligently care for those who are most vulnerable. These dedicated caregivers are nothing short of heroes.
Our goal is to provide a $50 or more gift card to Albertson's-Safeway for every caregiver working at the four senior residential facilities mentoned above.
Help give back to those who give their all for our loved ones! The Phoenix Holocaust Association has launched an initiative that seeks to give every caregiver at four senior care communities a grocery gift card. Click here to donate.

The Senior Concierge Project (through Jewish Family and Children's Service) can provide information and help with socialization, education, transportation, home care, living facilities, legal assistance and more for those over age 60. Reminder: There are hungry neighbors and families experiencing food insecurity throughout the Valley, throughout the year -- even if we can't always see it. And there are women who can't afford basic feminine products. Our food collection bin for
Mom's Pantry is always in our lobby, and our Kehillah Cares bag for
women4women tempe is in our ladies' room.
Please bring food
and toiletry donations whenever we are able to come back to Kehillah.
None of that is possible at the moment, but Mom's Pantry accepts donations on
Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are located at 13440 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. Call 602-992-0083 for other times.
