PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE __________________________
|
Dear Friends,
|
|
|
Gil Blumenthal |
Gearing up: Preparations for the High Holy Days are underway. You can check Kehillah
of work required to make everything look so "effortless."
At our last Board meeting, the majority of time was spent discussing ways to continue to
make the Kehillah experience relevant and meaningful. When you think about it, that's no
small task. Each of us wants something different from a synagogue. For some, it's purely
transactional - i.e., you pay your dues, come to services and life is good. Tradition! Others yearn for spirituality as they seek a deeper relationship with G-d. The beauty of the High Holy Days season is that it offers the opportunity for everyone to find, or in some cases renew, their Jewishness that somehow was misplaced over the long Arizona summer.
This is the season for reflection and It's heartening to see how our community has evolved through the years. Lynne and I "joined" shortly after Kehillah of Arizona (note the name) was organized. Little, other than the 18 Core Values established by the founders, remains. There was no membership, no dues, just a small group and a Rabbi seeking a better way to practice their faith and create community. It was that consistent focus on community that has allowed Kehillah to evolve and grow. Through it all, including many places that we've called "home," Kehillah has developed a comfortable niche and along with it, a reputation for being welcoming and inclusive.
The High Holy Day season brings us together like no other time of the year. We've grown and you will see some new faces along with some you haven't seen for a while. Let's take advantage of our time together to renew our sense of community. Take that extra minute to say more than Shana Tovah. We are, after all, Congregation Kehillah.
B'Shalom
,
Gil

THIS WEEK______________________________________
|
Saturday, September 21
6:30 p.m. - refreshments
7:00 p.m. - Havdalah and program
Selichot and ... Albert Brooks??
What does Albert Brooks (pictured at right) have to do with Selichot? Find out at our Selichot program, where we'll show clips from
Defending Your Life, starring Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep.
Selichot helps us prepare intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually for the High Holy Days. During the evening, we'll hear phrases from our most beloved High Holy Days prayers and melodies, change our Torah cover from its everyday garb to holiday white, and explore what Albert Brooks - and
Defending Your Life
- can teach us. Please RSVP if you have not already done so.

In Jewish life, one of our most meaningful roles is fulfilling
mitzvot
by helping each other when we are in need.
The Caring Committee of Congregation Kehillah works
as an extended family, to organize and mobilize aid
and
assistance for our community.
Our Caring Committee
- sends cards for simchas and milestones, including birthdays, anniversaries, and B'nai Mitzvah
- visits the ailing at home or in the hospital
- shops for groceries or delivers meals
- makes phone calls
- participates in activities with the Social Action Committee.

Please email Scarlett Allison
(or call her at 949-510-3379) if you are interested in volun
teering
, if you have ideas for how we can further assist each other, or if you would like any of the above.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS

Alan and Karen Thursby, for Yom Kippur
|
David and Ruthie Asher, for receiving the honor of opening the Ark during a Kabbalat Shabbat
|
Did you know . . .
that it is customary to donate at the time of Yizkor or when Kaddish is recited in memory of a loved one? It is also customary to make a donation when given an aliyah (honor) during a service.
Jewish Philanthropy: The Concept of Tzedakah is a much-admired practice throughout the world. "In Jewish tradition, tzedakah requires the donor share his or her compassion and empathy along with the money. Judaism teaches the belief that donors benefit from tzedakah as much [as] or more than the recipients."
You can find out more about the roots and practices of Jewish philanthropy at Learning to Give.

You can donate through our website in any amount or send a check. Congregation Kehlllah is a 501(c)(3) organization; donations are tax-exempt to the fullest extent allowable by law. (Please consult with your tax adviser.)
