THIS WEEKEND!

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday at 2:00 a.m.
Special Lenten Service - March 20 and 21
The Good News About Jesus Christ
 The Son of God

Pastor Tim Peterson is Director of Mount Carmel Ministries in Alexandria, Minnesota.   He has a unique gift that has enabled him to memorize the entire Gospel of Mark. Tim has presented all or significant parts of that gospel in churches, schools and other settings over the years.

We are delighted that he will be at Calvary the weekend of March 20th - 21st for all three of our services.   On Saturday evening, he will present about half of the gospel during worship (chapters 1-4, 8-9, and 14-16, which form the conclusion of the gospel, sometimes called the “Passion Narrative”).   On Sunday, because of our tighter schedule, he will only present the Passion Narrative.
Tim does not “act” the gospel – nor does he merely “recite” it.  His gift enables him to express the drama, nuances of speech, and subtleties of Mark that is both faithful, as a rendering of Scripture, and engaging enough for us to appreciate it. In addition to being God’s Holy Word, Mark is a sacred story.

We encourage you to invite others, - we believe we can accommodate friends and still remain at safe distances, and we trust that the Passion Story, especially during the season Lent, will be a memorable experience.    As Jesus said, “If you have ears to hear, then hear!”

A Note of Thanks .....
Dear Pastor Ken and Calvary Family,

There are not enough words to fully express my heartfelt thanks for the sympathy, love and support you have extended to me during this time of loss of my dear Lee. Your beautiful cards (which I am still receiving), thoughtful notes, and phone calls have meant so much to me. It is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered by me and my family.

Gratefully,

Holly Novotny
Music Ministry
Special Easter Music Opportunity for All!
Download the Prodigies Bells app
on your Iphone or Android.
Are you frustrated by the lack of singing? Do you long for the days of congregational participation? Would you like a solution that doesn’t compromise your safety in light of the pandemic?

I need YOU to ring bells for me on Easter! No, we’re not going to order more bronze bells. Did you know that your cell phone can become a virtual handbell? Yes, everyone can participate, even if you don’t know how to read music! No skills required! (You may want to practice first, though!)

What do you need to do?

First, download a FREE app to your phone. It’s called Prodigies Bells, and it’s available for both iPhone and Android smartphones. The app effectively turns your phone into a "handbell", which you can play by tapping the screen.

In the “Home” view of the app, you’ll want to go to the “Lesson Bells” and select a color-coded pitch. That way you aren’t confronted with an array of bells (which one was it again?).

Second, the music will be on the overhead screen in the Sanctuary. The video display will have a color-coded, clear indicator of where and when to play your note (pitch). (For those new to this, the musical alphabet only goes A-B-C-D-E-F-G, no H or beyond.) The pitches for “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and no distinction is made between octaves. Do not select any sharp (#) or flat (b) pitches, because they WILL be out of tune. You can link to a copy of the music using the button below.

To avoid practicing the “wrong” pitch, having empty notes or having to change over, I’m using last names to assign pitches. The chart at the left/top of this article shows the division among the bells, by alphabetical order of your last name.

If you are playing a G, you’ll wait until G comes along on the display and “hits” the bar which indicates the current note. I will make this available to you so you can practice in advance, and will offer a couple practice sessions both at church and via Zoom so we can iron out any confusion beforehand. I want this to be a fun, successful and satisfying experience for everyone! If I get a sense that you would like to repeat the experience, I will definitely see about adding more hymns to our repertoire! If you are not new to this and you would like to try playing more than one bell, you may do so.

Please contact me if you would like help downloading or working the app, or would like early access to the sheet music display video. My email is [email protected] and you may text or call at 414.625.0318.

**ISSUES WITH CLOSING THESE APPS have been noted: Please remember to close any other apps on your phone before you run these: also, you need to swipe horizontally to close the app, rather than vertical.

Our book for April is "The Address" by Fiona Davis. A bit of history, a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of intrigue.

Here we have the “compelling national bestselling novel about the thin lines between love and loss, success and ruin, passion and madness, all hidden behind the walls of The Dakota—New York City’s most famous residence.” (amazon.com)

Join us for discussion of this book whose story spans a century. Copies of the book can be picked up in the Church office.

NEW BIBLE STUDY!
Pastor Ken's Study Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.

“Christ in the Old Testament” is the subject of a seven-week series held on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Created by 1517.org, it will feature the teaching of Chad Bird, a noted Old Testament teacher and published author.

This course will examine how readers of the Old Testament are really reading a book that is all about Christ.  Whenever Jesus talked about himself (or when his earliest believers did), he and they did so by way of the Old Testament.
Monday AFTERNOON Movie
Monday, March 22nd
1:00 p.m. - Note New Time!

Our Monday Morning Movie for March is "St. John in Exile" and it is a film you won’t soon forget. It will be shown at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Here is an editorial review from Amazon.com:

Relive the events from Jesus Christ's life that changed the course of history as seen through the eyes of His most loyal apostle. This one-man stage show chronicles the imprisonment of John, the last living disciple of Jesus' twelve. Locked away in a cave-prison on the isle of Patmos, John remains full of humor and resolute in his faith in Jesus and God, the Father. Discover the story of Jesus in a completely new way from Emmy award-winning director Dan Curtis (War and Remembrance) and watch Dean Jones give a startling personal account of John's story.

This DVD of the one-man stage show runs 1 ½ hours, but it has an intermission break so we can stretch our legs, etc.

March Mission of the Month - NALC Disaster Relief
As you know, Calvary Lutheran Church is a congregation of the North American Lutheran Church. The NALC Disaster Response Fund provides resources for natural disaster victims in the United States.

When a disaster occurs (such as the cold weather and snow in Texas) funds are used to:

  • alleviate human suffering;
  • provide transitional assistance; and
  • enable those affected to begin the rebuilding process

In addition to funds, the NALC Disaster Response team collects and distributes items that can be given out to disaster victims.

To support this important Mission for the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.
Community Outreach
St. Vincent de Paul Meal Program
Donations Accepted
St. Vincent de Paul's meal program has significantly changed during COVID and serving of their nightly hot meals has been changed to ensure safe transfer of food. Food is now pre-packaged by St. Vincent de Paul staff and handed out to clients at the doors. Since the food is not donated as it was in the past, and their budget has had to incur this extra expense, they could use additional funding to purchase the food that is given out.

If you'd like to support this worthwhile cause, an easy way to do so is through your giving envelope, or online giving. Simply designate your contribution as "St. Vincent de Paul" and the church office will make sure it gets sent to SVDP. Last year we forwarded $1,345 of your generous donations to Saint Vincent de Paul - great job Calvary!
Did you know we have a food pantry collection box in the back hallway near Nicole's office? Food items (especially the "Big 8" items) are always needed and can be placed into the pantry box at any time.

These items are used for individuals who stop by the church looking for food assistance. Surplus items are donated to the Waukesha Food Pantry for their distribution to the community.

Please check expiration dates on items being donated to make sure they are not past date.

The "Big 8" items most needed are:

  • Canned fruits (esp. pineapple and mandarin oranges)
  • Shelf stable protein (stews, tuna, chicken, spam, tofu)
  • Rice - brown, white and boxed mixes
  • Chunky soup (ready-to-eat)
  • Canned pasta with meat
  • Shelf stable almond or soy milk
  • Soaps, laundry detergent, toilet paper
A few reminders ....
Our Stephen Ministers are here for you!
Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour.

If you, or someone you know, could benefit from this important ministry, please contact Scott or Peggy Langelin at 262.853.0018.
Flower Chart

Sanctuary Flowers Sign Up

We invite you to sign up for flowers to beautify our altar each weekend. The sign-up sheet for 2021 is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

Flowers are $35 and you may take them home following the 10:15 am worship on Sunday morning. If you'd prefer, you can leave the flowers at church to be enjoyed by the office staff.
The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.

Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.
The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The door that is closest to the office (NW corner) will be open during those hours.

Please check in with the office staff so we know you are in the building.

The office phone number is (262) 786-4010. Feel free to leave a message if you call after hours and we will contact you the next day.
Severe Weather Announcements
Even though we are getting closer to Spring, we are still in Wisconsin! The weather can shift from snowfall to severe weather as temperatures warm up. This could necessitate the cancelling of worship.

In the event this should happen, you will receive an e-mail stating that the church is closed and worship has been cancelled. We will also be sharing this with WISN-TV 12 and FOX6 so that it will be included in their scrolling list and on their website of closures.
If you are choosing to remain at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, any Calvary member, regardless of age or health, can request consecrated bread and juice from the weekend worship service. A sealed communion "kit", along with simple instructions to prepare you for communion, can be dropped off at your home by a member of our home communion ministry team.

If you'd like to get on the schedule for this important ministry, please contact the church office at 262.786.4010 or via email to [email protected].   You may set up a schedule of delivery weekly, or less often if you choose.
