Rainbow River Action Alert

November's Action Alert comes from Rev. Barb Certa-Werner, the clergy assistant to Bishop Dan. "As a nation, we continue to live through a government shutdown that, if it continues, will impact those who receive SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. On November 1, 2025, approximately 42 million Americans could lose this essential food assistance, creating a crisis for the most vulnerable." In addition to preparing for food insecurity on a scale that has not been seen in this country in decades, we have a responsibility to contact our elected officials and advocate for a path forward. Additionally, our current mission focus is our Veterans food drive to support the food pantry at the VA hospital and clinics!

Veterans Day 2025 Food Drive

Sugar River United Methodist Church is once again holding a food drive coinciding with Veterans Day to help fill the food pantries for Veterans at the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital and the Madison East Clinic, Baraboo Clinic, Rockford Clinic, Beaver Dam Clinic and the West Madison Clinic. We also want to honor all the Veterans in the church. On Sunday November 9 we will honor all our Veterans with a special Fellowship.

We once again would like to gather photos of all the Veterans at Sugar River.

Please send a picture of yourself in uniform to Carol Hagensick to be used as a display on the Veterans tribute table. You can email, text or give it to Carol or Tina in the office. It doesn’t matter if the picture is old, grainy, or black and white, we just want to honor your service.

Please have them to Carol as soon as possible, preferably no later than Thursday, Nov 6 so we can get them all printed and framed.

Warm Winters Project UPDATE

On Tuesday, 107 families attended the VASD Warm Winters Coat Distribution, hosted in partnership with Redeemer City and Sugar River UMC. An additional 38 families who couldn’t attend received winter gear through the efforts of VASD social workers.

Together, we helped distribute 539 jackets, 169 snow pants, 86 pairs of boots, and 70 pairs of waterproof gloves, a wonderful reflection of the generosity and compassion within our community. Volunteers also served 75 lunches and 100 dinners, offering families a warm meal and the chance to connect with one another and with school staff.

As one social worker shared, “We truly could not do this without the dedication of our church partners, who make this work look effortless.”

What remains of the VASD Winter gear stored and accessed by VASD social workers at Sugar River in the Community Closet throughout the year to support families who move into the district or were unable to attend the event.

As you can see by the metrics we ran low on many items. We are currently in need of snow pants, waterproof boots, mittens, and gloves in ALL sizes child through adult.  Donations of these items are appreciated anytime of the year.

You can also give financially through the Give tab on the Sugar River website by selecting Community Closet. 100% of donations go directly toward meeting the needs of closet. We aim to use a significant portion of the funds to purchase winter gear after the season when it’s discounted to restock the closet and in preparation for the 2026 Winter Gear Project.
