FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Ox Ridge Families,

I am spending a great deal of time getting to know Ox Ridge; I have been in many classrooms and have met with various groups within the building. I would like to share some of my thoughts

with you.

In the classrooms...

As I walk into the classrooms I have seen children engaged in activities, working in groups,

working individually or participating in a whole class activity. The teachers are asking thought-

provoking questions, the children are practicing what they are learning. The “feeling tone” is one

of a highly engaged student body, motivated by a highly professional staff.

Also in the classrooms are our paraprofessionals. Some of the paraprofessionals have the role

of working one on one with a child, others provide support for a classroom. This group of staff

know the children well and help them move ahead in their learning. Often they develop close

relationships with a child. These folks, also, care deeply for the children.

Communications...

Yesterday I met with our grade level leaders–in case you don’t know, each grade has one

teacher designated as their leader. The role of the leader is to bring ideas and concerns to the

administration. These are discussed at regularly scheduled meetings. My first meeting with this

group provided a thoughtful discussion and problem solving session.

The administrative team...

Ox Ridge has had a difficult year in terms of the school’s administrators–primarily because of life

events. The team in place now is a very strong, caring, thoughtful and hardworking team. In

the past two weeks I have had meaningful discussions and problem-solving sessions with them,

always with the focus of what is best for children. We are also supported by a wonderful

secretarial staff who treat the children and adults with caring and respect.

The PTO...

What a wonderful and supportive group! I have truly felt so welcomed by our community,

through the PTO communications. They provide activities for the children and celebrate our

staff. They also help me in understanding the culture of Ox Ridge.

My district colleagues...

My colleagues from the other schools and the central office have also made me feel extremely

welcome. There is a strong focus on cutting edge education, with discussion and support for

implementing new ideas.

I am thrilled to be leading Ox Ridge this year! The PTO has scheduled a coffee for 9:30 next

Wednesday morning. I look forward to seeing you there.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Laub

Dear Ox Ridge Community,

Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate! Wishing your family peace and light this holiday season.

As we wind up the year, we know things are so busy but we hope you are able to join us this Tuesday, December 13, for a coffee chat with our new interim principal Dr. Laub. This is a great opportunity for those who may not have been able to make it to our evening welcome to ask Dr. Laub any questions you may have or just take the opportunity to introduce yourself.

Additionally, this Tuesday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m., there will be a Board of Education meeting. On the agenda this week is the topic of our Early Literacy program which is of significance to the Ox Community. We will send out the materials and agenda on Monday evening for those interested.

Have a great week!

NEW KINDERGARTEN AGE REQUIREMENT

Do you have a child who will NOT be 5 years old by September 1, 2024, and are confused about the new Kindergarten age requirement? The Darien School District invites you to an information session on December 14th at 9:30 a.m. in the Board of Education meeting room, at 35 Leroy Avenue. In the last legislative session, the State of Connecticut has updated the age requirement for kindergarten enrollment. To be automatically eligible, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1. If your child does not meet the new entry cutoff date but you believe they are ready for kindergarten, you may request an exception by submitting a written request to the principal of your child’s designated school. Learn more by reading this letter and attending the information session.
