FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back from our break. The children came in happy to see their teachers and friends and ready to tackle the rest of the year. We have heard many exciting stories of trips and activities in which the children participated.

Success in school is supported by the support of the family at home. The National PTA has

identified these three characteristics as key to that support:

1. creating a home environment that encourages learning;

2. communicating high, yet reasonable, expectations for achievement; and

3. staying involved in a child’s education at school.

In an excellent article entitled “The Key to Student Success...,” The Annie E. Casey Foundation describes supporting your child’s learning and growth. The link to the complete article can be found here.

Harry Laub, Ph.D.

Interim Principal

Ox Ridge Elementary School

Dear Ox Ridge Community,

We have lots of exciting PTO events coming in March including our first Family Games Night fundraiser, on March 21, our Spring Book Fair, and our second annual Ox Rocks Talent Show.  However, without the support of parent volunteers like yourselves, we are unable to make these exciting events happen for our students! Please be sure to read the “School News” section of the Hoot for details on how to get involved!

Also, Yearbook sales have begun! You can purchase them directly HERE.  The yearbook team is especially in need of 100th Day photos - please email to the Yearbook team.

ROCK YOUR SOCKS DAY - WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY ON 3/21

World Down Syndrome Day is Thursday, March 21st (3/21), a day selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which leads to Down syndrome. We invite all students to wear bold, brightly colored, mismatched socks! Doing so allows us to celebrate all of the wonderful things about people with Down syndrome while also advocating for their rights, inclusion and well-being. We can't wait to see how our Ox Ridge community rocks their socks!

BOARD OF EDUCATION BUDGET UPDATE

On February 15th, the Board of Education (BOE) approved a 2024-2025 budget of $121,522,322, up 6.18% from the current year. On February 16th, an error was identified and the actual increased budget figure was calculated at $121,864,475, up 6.48%. Therefore on February 27th the BOE voted again to approve the revised figure and it passed unanimously; there was no review of line-by-line items. A replay of the meeting can be found here.

The budget will now move to the Board of Finance (BoF) for further review and approval. On Tuesday, March 5th, the BoF will begin discussions around the BoE budget and a public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12th.  Meeting materials for the March 5th meeting can be found here. We encourage parents and community members to participate in the public comment period at the upcoming Board of Finance meetings.
