FROM THE PTO

Dear Ox Ridge Parents,

We hope you all saw the special email blast sent this past Friday regarding the proposed cut of the requested fifth instructional aide/paraprofessional here at Ox Ridge. For those of you who have acted by emailing the Board of Education we thank you! For those who have not yet acted or who may have missed the email there is still time. Please consider sending an email by Tuesday, February 14th to advocate for our children and help support their teachers. More information is below:

Ox Ridge Administration requested adding a fifth instructional aide/paraprofessional to our school, who would begin at the start of the 2023-2024 school year. Ox Ridge is currently the largest school by enrollment, and a fifth aide would keep the paraprofessional to student ratio at 1:88, like the four other elementary schools in town.

When asked to find $1 million in cuts from his original budget, Dr. Addley suggested removing this requested 5th aide for Ox Ridge. This would bring Ox Ridge’s paraprofessional to student ratio to 1:102. Darien’s four other elementary schools stay at no more than 1:88. We feel this is inequitable.

Our instructional paraprofessionals (we currently have four and the budget cut would impact Ox Ridge gaining it’s needed fifth) support teachers in small group learning, help with classroom management, provide support for teachers to individualize instruction and assess needs along with important clerical efforts. These instructional paras also help manage the large student body, making sure that students are safe both physically and emotionally. Additionally, they cover "duties" throughout our school community including recess, lunch, morning arrival and dismissal, which are critical to the daily operation of our school. They also cover classes at times when no substitute is available for chunks of time per day.

We urge parents/guardians to write to the Board of Education to express the importance and need for a fifth instructional aide at Ox Ridge, before Tuesday, February 14th. We have provided BOE emails below for your convenience.

OX RIDGE NEWS

KINDNESS WEEK IS HERE!

The students will be participating in various activities this week to learn the 6 core Kindness Concepts:

1. Respect - Treating people, places, and things with kindness

2. Caring - Feeling and showing concern for others

3. Inclusiveness - Including others, inviting them in, and welcoming them with open arms

4. Integrity - Acting in a way you know to be right and kind in all situations

5. Responsibility - Being reliable to do the things that are expected or required of you

6. Courage - Being brave when facing new or difficult circumstances

Please have a look at this calendar of the week's activities to make sure your kids come to school ready to spread some kindness. Kindness t-shirts will be delivered to your child's class - we will try to have them sent home on Tuesday and the kids should wear them to school on Wednesday. If the delivery of t-shirts is delayed, teachers will hand them out on Wednesday for the kids to change into or wear over their school clothes.
