FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Hi All,

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on our annual evening PTO speakers-series event on October 7th! Lindsay, Christina and I will open the doors to families who want to stop by and see the school in-person prior to the meeting from 6:30 – 7:30. Please know that the experience will be an opportunity to get a general feel for the school, we can’t permit families to enter specific classrooms unaccompanied by one of us. If you are planning to attend, please register for the event.

One of the topics we’ll discuss at the meeting is an update from our Ox Ridge Building Committee. We are fortunate to have Kadi Lublin, the Ox Ridge community member on this committee, join our talk on the 7th. The building committee, in partnership with the district, have officially announced the “move in” date to the school “assembly wing” will be in August of 2022. This will allow the construction team the time they need to build and will provide us with a more generous time frame for the move over the summer weeks.

Finally, I want to take a moment to promote our very own music teacher, James Allen, for his work with the Connecticut American chapter of the “Orff-Schulwerk” Association. For years, James has been a pioneering music educator in this community and he has recently been elected to serve as the treasurer of the organization.

Orff-Schulwerk, sometimes described as simply “Orff”, is an incredibly powerful and joyful means of teaching music! I’ve had the good fortune to learn from James over the years. If you’d like a quick overview of Orff-Shulwerk pedagogy in action, check out this brief clip.

The Orff approach beautifully connects to both our “Readers and Writers Workshop” and our approach to scaffolding math instruction through a thoughtful progression of direct instruction, time for guided practice with teacher feedback and questions as kids move into creativity and composition! This week, James was invited to lead a workshop for Waterbury Public Schools faculty on bringing this exciting approach to learning to their schools!

Thanks,
Luke

WE NEED YOUR HELP. First, if you have a veteran in your life (and have never provided us with a bio before), please fill out this form and upload any pictures you have/are willing to share with the community on the bulletin board. Second, please let the veteran(s) in your life know we will be producing a video (click here to view last year's video), and ask if they would be willing to tape a few short answers for us this year (we'll be in touch with questions).

Please contact us with any questions or if you are willing/able to help us with the bulletin board. Thank you so much! Taylor Carter & Nancy Liddell

THRIVING YOUTH TIP
Nicole Zasowski, LMFT describes anxiety as “The overestimation of danger and the underestimation of our ability to cope.” When children seem stressed or anxious, Zasowksi reminds parents “you don’t have to agree with the threat to validate the feeling.” This week, take time to listen and validate a concern your child shares with you. Instead of jumping to problem solving, try using phrases like: “I can understand why __ would make you anxious,” or “I can see this is really hard for you.” See how your child responds.

Talk early, talk often. Thriving Youth/The Community Fund of Darien
