Attention Chamber Members & Business Owners:
We Want to Hear from You - Help the City of La Mesa Evaluate How to Spend Their Funding
| |
We want to hear from you on the subject of asking for $2 million in ARPA funds for local businesses. We have shortened the survey to help obtain the information we need to request these funds from the City of La Mesa. Please note - you do NOT have to fill out ALL of the answers for your survey to be counted! So take a quick moment and answer what you can to help us determine that there is a need from local businesses to receive ARPA funding. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call Mary England, President & CEO of the Chamber 619-251-7730.
Note: For purposes of this survey, we will consider the beginning of the pandemic as approximately March 2020.

U.S. Economy Shrinks for a Second Quarter
The U.S. economy shrank from April through June for a second straight quarter, contracting at a 0.09 percent annual pace and raising fears that the nation may be approaching a recession. The GDP report for last quarter pointed to weaknesses across the economy. Consumer spending slowed as Americans bought fewer goods. Businesses slowed the restocking of their shelves, shaving percentage points from the GDP. Higher borrowing rates, a consequence of the Federal Reserve’s series of rate hikes, clobbered home construction, which shrank at a 14 percent annual rate. Government spending dropped too. On July 27th the Fed raised its benchmark rate by a sizeable three-quarters of a point for a second straight time in its push to conquer the worst inflation outbreak in four decades. Americans are still spending, though more tepidly. Spending on goods like appliances and furniture, dropped at a 4.4 percent annual rate last quarter. But spending on services, like airline trips and dinners out, rose a 4.1 percent rate, indicating that millions of consumers are venturing out more. 30-Year Mortgages Retreat to 5.3%
Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates retreated this past week just as the Federal Reserve announced another big rate hike in its bid to get four-decade high inflation under control. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported this week that the 30-year rate fell back to 5.3 percent from 5.54 percent last week. One year ago, the average 30-year rate was 2.8 percent. The Fed on July 27th ratcheted up its main borrowing rate by three -quarters of a point, the second such increase in less than two months. Higher borrowing rates have discouraged house hunters and cooled what was a red-hot housing market.

5,000 Fewer Americans Applied for Unemployment Benefits Last Week
Fewer Americans applied for jobless benefits last week, but the previous week’s number was revised upward significantly, with claims breaking the 250,000 level in back-to-back weeks for the first time in more than eight months. Earlier this month, the Labor Department reported that employers added 372,000 jobs in June, a surprisingly robust gain and like the pace of the previous two months. Economists had expected job growth to slow sharply last month given the broader signs of economic weakness. The unemployment rate remained 3.6 percent for a fourth straight month, matching a near 50-year low that was reached before the pandemic struck in early 2020. Earlier in July, the government reported that the U.S. employers advertised fewer jobs in May amid signs that the economy is weakening though the overall demand for workers remained strong. There are nearly two job openings for every unemployed person. Source: The San Diego Union Tribune – The Associated Press.
