Good morning. It's Thursday, October 1, and the Valley has a new world champion to celebrate. Phoenix native Brandon McNulty won the elite men's road race at the world cycling championships, the first American man to claim the title since 1993. Don't miss how a solo breakaway made history.

Today's Highlight Adrian Fontes and Alex Kolodin met Wednesday in their final televised debate for Arizona secretary of state, trading personal attacks and few policy specifics five weeks before the Nov. 3 election. The winner will oversee statewide elections and certify Arizona's 2028 presidential results. The candidates split over Proposition 144, Kolodin's measure requiring government-issued identification for all voters, including mail voters. Fontes said it would gut mail voting, while Kolodin disagreed. They also clashed over voter-roll accuracy and ballot-counting speed.
