Good evening! It's Thursday, October 22, and Tempe just extended a winning streak that started before most current freshmen hit middle school. Arizona State again holds the nation's top innovation ranking, a dozen years running. Don't miss the new medical program university leaders credit for keeping ASU ahead of MIT and Stanford.

The National Weather Service warns of heavy rain and flash flooding in the Phoenix metro this morning after Wednesday's storms shattered windows and dented cars across northern and central Arizona. Following our forecast preview, the system brought the state's first tornado watches since October 2010; at least nine tornado warnings were issued in northern Arizona, though no tornadoes had been confirmed in the available reports. Hail damaged cars and businesses near 19th Avenue and Thunderbird Road in north Phoenix. A flood watch runs through this evening.

02 One Scottsdale will add a 157-room Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel called the Dowe, with construction expected to start by month's end north of Loop 101. 05 The Phoenix Suns lost their season opener 124-83 in Portland Wednesday after the Trail Blazers opened with a 21-0 run. Phoenix also lost Oso Ighodaro to a right-hip injury late in the first half; he did not return, leaving a health concern as the Suns prepare to host Golden State Saturday.

Interesting... Arizona State University ranks No. 1 nationally for innovation for the 12th straight year, every year the category has existed. Leaders credit the new John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering, which welcomed its first cohort this fall and offers dual medical and engineering degrees. The W. P. Carey School also claimed the country's top undergraduate supply-chain program.
