Our New Rabbi Is Rabbi Gabriel Botnick!
A message from our president, Judy Gordon

The Board is really happy to announce that Rabbi Gabriel Botnick has accepted our offer of employment to be Mishkon's rabbi as of August 1, 2016.

The Search Committee used the results of the focus groups you participated in to develop a list of the needs of the congregation and the job description, went through your survey responses, reviewed all of their interview materials, and checked every reference. The Search Committee, feeling strongly that Rabbi Botnick is best suited for Mishkon's future, recommended him to the Board as our next rabbi, and the Board voted to approve.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send them to me (Judy Gordon, Board President) at 33malka33@gmail.com. If you would like to send congratulations to Rabbi Botnick, he can be found at rabbi@gabrielbotnick.com.

Rabbi Botnick will begin his tenure with us on August 1 as Rabbi Dan moves into the position of Rabbi Emeritus. I hope we will see you all on August 5 and August 6 to help celebrate Rabbi Botnick's first Shabbat as our rabbi.  I look forward to a wonderful partnership between Rabbi Botnick and our exceptional Mishkon community as we move forward.

About Rabbi Botnick:

Ordained by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Rabbi Gabriel Botnick serves as Rabbi of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills and was previously the Rabbinic Intern of IKAR and a long-standing member of its musical prayer team.  He also works as a certified Mohel performing Brit Milah and is the only non-Orthodox Shochet in America certified by the Israeli Rabbinate to perform kosher slaughter. Gabriel is the founder of Tekumah, the first and only Jewish organization dedicated to teaching the holy trades to any Jew interested in learning.  Before rabbinical school, he worked for many years as a jeweler, community organizer, and youth director.

Drawing on his extensive experience as a musician, community organizer, and teacher, Gabriel is passionate about developing innovative and engaging ways to access the Jewish tradition as well as making Judaism relevant and meaningful in our busy, modern lives.  A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he has lived in Los Angeles for more than a decade. Both Gabriel and his wife, Rose Prevezer, are long-term lovers of Venice and its vibrant community.  They are thrilled to be joining the Mishkon Tephilo family and look forward to settling into their new spiritual and communal home.
