Project Impact:STEM & Innovation at Laguna Rd
In the STEM Lab this week, Second graders were given the opportunity to continue their lessons and applications of force by engineering and testing out different types of catapults! They discovered and examined how Newton’s Thirds Law of Motion produces forces equal and opposite to a force applied. While testing, the students measured how far their catapult launched the object in an effort to compare their catapult design effectiveness with their peers. We will continue to examine force in a hands-on fashion with magnets and gravity, in an effort to quantify forces that we may not be able to see.

“Only 19% of Bachelor’s Degrees in Computer Science were awarded to women as recently as 2010”, highlighting the need for exposure to STEM at early ages for all genders.
Tech Corner
Second grade students are so excited about making Google slide presentations detailing their 2nd grade experience. Through Google slides, students are able to make mulitmedia presentations that capture their experience in all parts of second grade!
Writing Workshop
As students go through their Opinion writing they track their Teaching Points in their writer's notebook to keep track of central ideas to opinion writing. Work on this genre is essential not only to Writing Workshop, but to preparing students for the rigor of the SBAC Performance Tasks. Pictured below are 4 Teaching Point (TPs) that each anchored a mini-lesson for students to strengthen their Opinion writing.
