This Week's Blogs

A Direct Line: This week, Donya shared the second article in a six-part leadership series from the Great Dane Group. "The Success Trap" encourages credit union leaders to challenge assumptions, stay open to new ideas, and continuously evolve to meet changing member needs and industry trends. Read the article for insights on avoiding complacency and building long-term success, and share it with your teams.

Personal Finance Blog: We're continuing to celebrate Co-op Month with a little history lesson. Credit unions have shared a common "people over profit" philosophy since their humble beginnings in rural Germany. A lot has changed since then, but some things remain the same, especially the way you continue to serve your members. Read this week's personal finance blog, then test your knowledge by obtaining your Montana Credit Union Philosophy Certification.

PARTING SHOT

The Cooperative Competitive Advantage

As we celebrate Co-op Month 2026, it's a fitting time to reflect on a question that continues to grow in importance: What is the cooperative competitive advantage? In an era marked by mergers, acquisitions, and increasing consolidation across the financial services industry, the answer may be more relevant than ever.

This year's Co-op Month theme, "Built for This Moment," reminds us that cooperatives were specifically created to address unmet needs, strengthen communities, and provide an alternative to purely profit-driven business models. The theme recognizes that cooperatives have historically thrived during times of uncertainty because they are designed to put people first and balance economic success with community impact.

For credit unions, that advantage is not theoretical. It is woven into our DNA.

While many financial institutions are becoming larger and more centralized, credit unions remain rooted in relationships. Our members are not customers; they are owners. Our success is measured not only by financial performance but by how effectively we improve the financial lives of the people and communities we serve.

Perhaps more importantly, credit unions understand something that many industries are rediscovering: collaboration can be a competitive strategy.

One of the seven cooperative principles is Cooperation Among Cooperatives, recognizing that organizations become stronger when they share knowledge, expertise, and resources. Credit unions have long embraced this philosophy through shared branching networks, collaborative advocacy efforts, CUSOs, joint educational initiatives, and partnerships that help institutions of every size remain viable and competitive. Next week is our second annual Coop Academy, where cooperators from all sectors in Montana will gather to learn about cooperative leadership, community engagement, and cooperative development.

Here in Montana, we see that advantage every day.

Across our movement, credit unions are increasingly emphasizing community impact, financial well-being, and collaboration as key differentiators. The messaging is remarkably consistent. Credit unions across Montana are highlighting their commitment to helping members achieve financial success, investing in local communities, supporting financial literacy, and putting people before profits.

At Montana's Credit Unions, we've embraced that same philosophy through our professional communities, advocacy networks, educational programs, and peer collaboration initiatives. We believe that when credit unions share ideas, solve problems together, and support one another's success, every member across Montana benefits.

The reality is that our greatest competitive advantage may not be our products, technology, or size. It may be our willingness to work together. We experienced this firsthand a couple of weeks ago at our CEO Roundtable in Whitefish.

In many industries, competitors guard information and view one another with suspicion. Credit unions routinely pick up the phone and help one another solve operational challenges, prepare for regulatory changes, improve member service, or develop emerging leaders. That level of cooperation would surprise many outside our movement; however, it remains one of the defining characteristics of who we are.

As consolidation continues throughout the financial services landscape, some may see larger institutions as possessing the advantage. Yet history suggests otherwise.

Organizations that stay connected to their communities, listen to their stakeholders, and work collaboratively often demonstrate a level of resilience that cannot be acquired through size alone. Credit unions that focus on the cooperative advantage can — and do — thrive regardless of asset size!

That is the cooperative difference.

This Co-op Month, I encourage you to celebrate not only your own credit union's impact, but also the broader cooperative network that makes our collective success possible. Take time to share your story, recognize your partnerships, and remind your members that they are part of something bigger than a financial institution. They are part of a movement.

Because in a world where many organizations are becoming bigger, the cooperative model continues to prove that working together remains one of the strongest competitive advantages of all.

After all, we weren't just built to compete. We were Built for This Moment.

Have a great weekend.

Cooperatively,

Gerry
