WEEKLY UPDATE FROM MONTANA'S CREDIT UNIONS | March 28, 2025

Happy Friday! We're looking forward to April, which is action-packed for credit unions and bound to be warmer for us all. But first, we have celebratory news, resources to help make your job easier, the #CUDifference for Gen Z, and more. Enjoy!

NEWS FOR YOU

Congratulations are in Order! It was a big week for Montana's credit unions. In Austin, TX, Josh Wilson (Whitefish CU) took the helm as chair of America's Credit Unions' Marketing, PR, & Development Council. A little closer to home, Clearwater CU opened a beautiful new branch in Butte. Read about the sustainability-focused building and the community input throughout the project in an article from The Montana Standard. Congratulations, all! (Click each image to enlarge.)

What We're Reading, Watching, and Listening To

New Podcast Alert: The first podcast from CUInsight features the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" campaign. Give the podcast a listen, then bookmark the page to catch all the future podcasts. We're looking forward to them!

Advocacy Update

"Don't Tax My Credit Union" Resources for Your Teams and Members: Preserving the credit union tax status is essential to maintaining your ability to serve members effectively, support local economies, and provide financial services to those who need them most. Unfortunately, that tax status is being challenged at the federal level. We've compiled a resource page to help you articulate the “credit union difference” to your members, communities, and lawmakers. We encourage you to incorporate some of this messaging into your communications plan.

This Week's Blogs

A Direct Line: This week's blog comes from Jeff Rendel, a certified speaking professional you may have seen at some of our events. In the blog, he explores four ways "how AI is reshaping brand management through the lenses of operational impact, strategic foresight, tailored engagement, and innovative solutions." The blog also includes six actionable tasks for credit unions to start embracing AI tools.

Personal Finance Blog: For some people, trying to build an emergency fund while paying off debt seems insurmountable. This week's personal finance blog offers suggestions to break down savings into smaller goals and suggests a few hacks to save even more. It also includes links to two other blogs on emergency funds.

Don't forget! Next week kicks off Credit Union Youth Month with a series of five personal finance blogs to help set kids up for a successful financial future. Questions? Contact Michelle.

THE CREDIT UNION DIFFERENCE

Billings FCU at Chamber event

Last week, Ally, Jana, and Julia from Billings FCU participated in the Medical & Healthcare Student Connect through the Billings Chamber. Local businesses spoke with medical and healthcare students attending college in Billings. Most of the students were not originally from Montana so the intent was to connect students to local businesses and services. Billings FCU shared their community focus, latest technology — such as their new mobile and online banking, chat feature, and text banking — and the credit union difference. The students enjoyed local brews, food, and networking with each other and local businesses like Billings FCU. Way to share the #CUDifference with Gen Z, Billings FCU! (Click to enlarge the gif.)

Spring: Hope and Renewal

I enjoyed Spring Break last week with my family visiting our daughter, who is a nurse at Stanford Children's Hospital. She has been a nurse at children’s hospitals since graduating from Montana State several years ago. I’m always in awe of the work of our children’s hospitals across the country, including our own here in Montana: Shodair Children’s Hospital. They provide hope for families dealing with life’s challenges, and I am thankful that Montana’s credit unions support them.

We returned to Bozeman to amazing spring weather, which always reminds me of hope and renewal. Many Montana families are struggling with housing, childcare, employment, and simply making ends meet. That’s where you come in! You provide hope and renewal every day. You help Montanans achieve their hopes and dreams, which may be just to make it to the next paycheck or to buy a reliable car to get to work. You are there to help them make good choices with their finances and sometimes have to say, “Not yet; let’s talk about a plan that gets you where you want to be.” In a world of uncertainty, you provide hope. I’m so proud of the work you do!

As I reflect on our 2024 Impact Report and the plans we have to support you in 2025, I remain excited about our combined impact in advocacy, education, and collaboration! I am excited to celebrate with you at upcoming events or wherever we meet. Have a great spring weekend.

Cooperatively, Gerry
