WEEKLY UPDATE FROM MONTANA'S CREDIT UNIONS | January 17, 2025

Happy Friday! However you plan to spend your weekend, we hope you enjoy it. Like many of you, we will be out of the office on Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We encourage you to spend a little time over the extended weekend reflecting on and celebrating MLK's extraordinary life of service.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Julie Cayse

New Western Region Director: The NCUA named Julie Cayse (pictured here) as the new Western Region Director this week. She takes over for Cherie Freed, who retired in early September. The region includes 22 states, including Montana. We worked with Julie in her previous role as Associate Regional Director of Operations and look forward to continuing to see how we can collaborate to the benefit of stronger credit unions in Montana. As NCUA Chairman Todd Harper noted, "She will be a strong, collaborative, and energetic leader, and I look forward to seeing what Julie will accomplish."

Support our CU Community: Montana’s Credit Unions stand in solidarity with our peers impacted by the devastating wildfires in California. Join us in supporting relief efforts through CUAid, which provides vital assistance to credit union employees and volunteers affected by these tragedies.

THE CU DIFFERENCE

Montana Hike the Hill 2025

The #CUDifference is at the heart of everything credit unions do, but advocating for the #CUDifference takes it a step further. The inaugural Montana Hike the Hill brought together over 30 credit union professionals from across the state for a day of advocacy and engagement at the Capitol. Participants had the opportunity to network with lawmakers during a luncheon in the Rotunda, fostering meaningful conversations about the impact of credit unions in Montana communities. The group was proudly introduced during both the House and Senate floor sessions, highlighting the strength and unity of Montana’s credit union movement. This successful event showcased the importance of grassroots advocacy in supporting the financial well-being of Montanans.

PARTING SHOT

MCOC and Hike the Hill 2025

Collaboration in Action: Wow! What a week! I love our credit unions and the critical role they play in Montana. This week, I saw firsthand the power of collaboration as cooperatives from across the state came together for the Montana Council of Cooperatives (MCOC) annual meeting in Helena. In addition to a powerful lineup of speakers and sessions, the MCOC hosted a legislative reception for members of the Montana legislature. This was a great opportunity to demonstrate the power of cooperation as electric coops, ag coops, broadband coops, credit unions, and other cooperatives came together to talk about the unique way that cooperatives serve Montana communities and support inclusive economies.

On Wednesday, Montana’s Credit Unions hosted a legislative luncheon in the Capitol rotunda. Nearly 30 credit union professionals from across the state came to talk with legislature members about the credit union difference. Other cooperatives came to show their support for credit unions, and legislative friends of credit unions introduced us from the floor of the Senate and House.

I can think of no better way to see the value of collaboration than when many collaborators come together to share their stories and celebrate the unique way we serve our members and communities. I offer my sincere gratitude and thanks to everyone who came to Helena this week and to our staff who worked tirelessly to make these events happen. Together, we are making a difference!

We are all credit union and cooperative champions and advocates. Within the next week, I challenge you to tell someone about the difference credit unions have made in your life. Enjoy your weekend.

Cooperatively, Gerry
