FOR YOUR DUES

What We're Reading, Watching, and Listening To

All-Staff Meetings, KPIs, and Quarterly Sprints... Oh My! We're reading a recent Credit Union Times article from Mark Arnold to learn best practices for keeping our strategic planning working for us all year, not just in the fourth wing quarter. (#IYKYK)

Common Communication Concerns: At last week's MCOC Annual Meeting, we learned about the Think Fast, Talk Smart podcast from Matt Abrahams. Since we're all in communications, like it or not, it's a good listen for tips from industry experts.

The Magic of Storytelling: This powerful article from CUInsight tells the story of one woman's journey through financial insecurity. It also provides a few easy ways credit unions can tell their own stories. Do you have a great story to tell? Email Michelle.

Advocacy Update

CEOs in DC Jan 2025

Montana CU Advocates in DC: This week, three Montana credit union CEOs traveled to Washington, DC, with Karen and met with Senator Daines — a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee — to emphasize the critical importance of preserving credit unions’ tax-exempt status. With tax reform discussions on the horizon, the CEOs highlighted how this exemption enables credit unions to offer low-cost financial services, invest in local communities, and serve members who might otherwise be underserved.

Their advocacy underscores the role credit unions play in strengthening Montana’s economy and supporting working families. The group also met with newly elected Senator Sheehy and Congressman Downing to introduce them to the credit union difference and its positive impact on Montana’s families and economy.

A Roadmap for AI Deployment: Rapid advancements in technology make it crucial for credit unions to understand the promising future of AI. Courageous Conversations

Leaders and managers who attend this session will learn strategies to release fear, build courage, and develop new skills for handling challenging conversations.

THE CU DIFFERENCE

RMCU Nonprofit Days

"Nonprofit Days" is a new program at Rocky Mountain CU that spotlights some great organizations and people in the community while connecting members and staff to volunteer or donation opportunities. One Friday each month, lightly vetted nonprofits in Helena are invited to set up a table in one of Rocky Mountain CU's branches to educate on the services they provide the community.

This Friday will be their first event, and we can't wait to see how it goes! Learning about nonprofit organizations in the community is the #CUDifference.

PARTING SHOT

Collaboration

Collaboration in Action (Part 2): Last week, I talked about collaboration in action with our fellow cooperative community across Montana as well as our advocacy work at the State Capitol. These are great examples of our collective impact as we serve Montanans.

Collaboration is a key component of our strategic plan at Montana’s Credit Unions. We live and breathe collaboration within our credit union community. While we all play a role in supporting collaboration at MCU, Donya is leading our specific initiative around it. She continues to meet with our credit unions to learn their top needs to help determine how we may play a role in supporting them. Some of the top needs that we continually hear are focused on human resources, marketing, IT, and accounting. We are exploring different options within these categories, and some of you are testing programs and sharing your experiences with your peers. We will continue to work diligently to provide the best collaboration opportunities in your areas of need.

We will be hosting a small credit union roundtable at Power Up this May, which is another example of collaboration. You will learn from your peers, hear expert speakers, and explore collaborative solutions.

Our Tristate Collaborative partnership with Minnesota and Wisconsin is another example of collaboration. Ultimately, our goal is to bring value to our credit unions across the three states through expanded partnerships, new businesses, options for being more efficient (both at the credit union and trade association level), and joint education and mentoring opportunities.

Finally, we are exploring some interesting business opportunities that will potentially provide additional value to the league and you in areas important to you. Stay tuned for more information!

If you have ideas or suggestions for additional collaborations, please let me know! Have a super weekend.

Cooperatively, Gerry
