WEEKLY UPDATE FROM MONTANA'S CREDIT UNIONS | January 9, 2026

Happy New Year!

How exciting to have a fresh start and a new calendar! Are you more of an Outlook calendar kind of person, or would you rather hang a physical calendar on your wall or carry it in your laptop bag? We did a little research, and according to a Newsweek article, 70% of people prefer a digital calendar. However, the same article quoted Dr. Ashleigh Powell, who said, “The very action of crossing off a task can give the brain a little hit of dopamine, which reinforces that sense of achievement and makes us more likely to keep completing further tasks.”

Whichever way you choose organize your life, we hope you make it a great 2026. Cheers! 🎉

NEWS YOU CAN USE

What Credit Unions Need to Know About Auto Loan Interest Reporting: On December 31, the IRS issued proposed rules that clarify reporting requirements on the auto loan interest deduction that resulted from the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. America's Credit Unions has a new compliance blog that explains it well and has updated their FAQs on the topic.

Here are a few of the biggest takeaways:

  • 2025 reporting has transitional guidance that allows some flexibility in how you provide the information to taxpayers; and
  • For tax reporting starting in 2026, it does appear the IRS expects the credit union to determine whether the vehicle qualifies for the deduction, as you will be required to report the information to the IRS and the taxpayer next year (unless the proposed rule changes).

We will continue to keep an eye on things and will communicate any new information as it becomes available.

Haley DaVee

Haley DaVee Named President/CEO of Millennium Corporate Credit Union: Millennium Corporate CU is excited to welcome Haley DaVee as its new President and CEO. A respected leader in the credit union movement, Haley brings nearly two decades of senior leadership experience and a proven commitment to strengthening organizations that serve credit unions and their members. Read the full media release for more details.

Congratulations and welcome, Haley! We look forward to working with you.

Check Fraud Mitigation Toolkit: We continue to hear that the volume of "good old-fashioned" check fraud continues to surprise credit unions and others in the financial industry. Check fraud attempts have increased significantly in recent years, even as fewer people are writing checks. Do you realize some of your employees may have never written checks and might not know what standard features they should look for? That makes it more important than ever to train your frontline team. The Federal Reserve Check Fraud Mitigation Toolkit is a great way to get started — it's free, easy, and designed to support training in three easy modules.

2026 Advocacy Priorities: America’s Credit Unions has kicked off 2026 by formally outlining its advocacy priorities to Congress and federal regulators. In a letter sent this week, Scott Simpson, President and CEO of America’s Credit Unions, emphasized a continued focus on advancing, empowering, and protecting credit unions to ensure they can best serve people and communities.

Economic Update: With housing affordability under pressure heading into 2026, America’s Credit Unions Chief Economist Curt Long breaks down what’s driving today’s housing market challenges and what may lie ahead. In this month’s Economic Update, Long examines declining sales, slowing construction, and mortgage rate trends — offering key insights for credit unions navigating a strained housing environment.

FOR YOUR DUES

The Roundtable 2025

Feeling the January Crunch? Cold weather, packed inboxes, and a fast start to the new year can make it hard to pause and think big-picture. The Roundtable is a two-day event built exclusively for credit union CEOs, senior leaders, and board members who want to step away from the daily grind, reset their perspective, and kick off the year with fresh ideas, practical insights, and meaningful peer connections.

Why leaders love The Roundtable:

  • Time to think strategically before the year gets too far underway
  • Executive- and board-specific sessions on leadership, growth, AI, and trends
  • Candid conversations with peers who understand your challenges
  • A chance to recharge — and return home with clarity and momentum

And yes, it doesn’t hurt that it’s in sunny Las Vegas instead of snowy Montana! Here are some important deadlines to keep in mind:

THE CREDIT UNION DIFFERENCE

NWEEFCU Christmas #CUDifference

Christmas may have been a few weeks ago, but this #CUDifference story is sure to bring joy to your heart. In early December, the staff at Butte’s NorthWestern Energy Employees FCU (NWEEFCU) began discussing what to do for a Christmas gift exchange. In true "people helping people" style, one of the very first ideas shared was to help a family in need. There was no hesitation — the entire staff immediately agreed.

Coincidentally, later that same week, the credit union received a letter from Action Inc., a local Butte assistance program, inviting individuals and businesses to participate in their Adopt-A-Family program. The credit union quickly reached out and was matched with two families, totaling seven children between the ages of 3 and 10.

Through staff donations and $500 from the credit union, NWEEFCU was able to shop with over $1,000 for these seven children! (Pictured above; click to enlarge.)

On Christmas morning, each child opened a brand-new winter coat, hats, gloves, and a wonderful assortment of toys — helping make their holiday a little warmer and a lot brighter.

Thank you for making the #CUDifference, NWEEFCU! You're an inspiration to all!

PARTING SHOT

Word of the Year

Word of the Year

Happy New Year, Montana Credit Unions and friends. I trust you all enjoyed the holidays with family and friends, as well as some downtime. I know I did! For several years, I have chosen a word of the year as I head into the new year.

After a lot of reflection and anticipation, I have chosen the word, Together. You’ve heard and seen me use this word often as I talk about our great, collaborative work to support the financial needs of Montanans across the state. I end my emails with “Cooperatively, Gerry,” and I fully embrace working together and connecting people as core values.

So, it only seems appropriate that my word in 2026 is Together. This year, I hope to deepen our connections, foster increased collaboration, and “learn into” ways we can innovate to bring value to our credit unions. With our three pillars — advocacy, education, and collaboration — as our backbone, our team has big plans for 2026, as you’ll see throughout this report and ones to come.

We are also releasing our 2025 Impact Report soon, so that you can see the different ways we supported and served you last year. From our 2025 impact, we will build on our momentum — together.

The work you all do is powerful work, necessary work, and difference-making work. There’s an urgency to this word, together, as our members face uncertainties and challenges they know and ones they don’t yet know. Our credit unions face challenges in fraud, staffing (hiring and retaining), development, systems, and a myriad of other issues. The good news is that together we can face these challenges while creating new solutions in collaborative ways.

Nigerian poet Philip Abayomi Olorunfemi captures the essence of “together” well in his poem, The Circle of Friends. I was struck by the struggles and urgent needs of our families as well as the power of facing them together instead of alone. We need one another now more than ever. Let’s charge into 2026 together.

The Circle of Friends

A mother stood in her fragile home,

her children laughing in the quiet room.

But a serpent of trouble, silent and sly,

slithered near with a hungry eye.

She fought with courage, heart aflame,

but alone, her strength could not tame

the coils of fear, the tightening breath

she stood at the doorway of certain death.

Then, footsteps thundered, voices rang,

her friends appeared, a faithful band.

They struck the serpent, tore its pride,

lifted her burden and turned the tide.

Together they cast the darkness away,

together they saved the light of her day.

A truth was spoken in that fierce hour:

no soul survives on strength alone,

we live because of a greater power

the hands that hold when hope has flown.

So cherish your circle, keep it warm,

a bond of shelter through every storm.

Be the one who answers the call,

who lifts a friend when shadows fall.

For life is woven, thread by thread,

by those who walk with us, not ahead.

And when the serpent of sorrow appears,

it is friendship’s wings that calm our fears.

Be true, be near, be kind, be known

no heart should ever stand alone

Enjoy your week!

Cooperatively (and Together), Gerry
