NEWS YOU CAN USE

Elder Financial Exploitation Prevention Toolkit: America’s Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) is offering a complimentary Elder Financial Exploitation Prevention Toolkit to help credit unions combat a form of fraud that costs older adults an estimated $3–$3.4 billion annually. The toolkit includes member education materials, social media and community outreach assets, and practical guides and tools for frontline staff. Credit unions are encouraged to use the toolkit during June’s Elder Abuse Awareness Month or anytime throughout the year. Through this partnership, Montana’s Credit Unions and other leagues are collectively strengthening the movement’s ability to protect older adults from financial exploitation.

Fraud-Fighting 2025 Accomplishments: FinCEN’s Year in Review highlights how the agency safeguarded the financial system over the past year, including advances in combating fraud, elder financial exploitation, money laundering, and other illicit activity while modernizing the AML/CFT framework. It’s a concise snapshot of where risks are evolving — and how FinCEN is responding.

Spotting Investment Fraud: A new article from AARP breaks down the latest investment scams — now the costliest type of fraud — highlighting common tactics, red flags, and how scammers exploit emotions, trust, and promises of quick returns. It includes practical steps consumers can take to protect themselves, from questions to ask to tools for checking credentials and reporting fraud.

Advocacy Update: Hear directly from Kathleen Coulombe, the new Chief Advocacy Officer at America’s Credit Unions, on the latest episode of A CU Seat at the Table as she shares her advocacy philosophy, leadership approach, and what drew her to the credit union movement. She also offers insight on measuring long-term advocacy success and why consistent, grassroots engagement is essential to telling the credit union story.

This Week's Blogs

A Direct Line: Are executive sessions even that big of a deal? Yes. In fact, they're so important that Donya and Gerry had to split the topic into two fun-filled blogs. The first blog was published on Wednesday, and it covers what an executive session is and why boards should use them. Give it a read, and stay tuned for Part Two next week!

Personal Finance Blog: Teenagers literally don't have a fully formed brain. So, expecting them not to make little money mistakes here and there is unrealistic. This week's personal finance blog offers suggestions on guiding teens' financial choices without making all the decisions for them. Because, like dinners of salad and ice cream, it's all about balance.

THE CREDIT UNION DIFFERENCE

Through a matching grant opportunity with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Intrepid Credit Union turned a $20,000 investment into $68,592 in total support for six essential nonprofit partners in Helena, Bozeman, and Billings. By leveraging a 2.43‑to‑1 match, Intrepid helped expand funding for local organizations focused on housing, health care, child well‑being, and community services — stretching every dollar further for greater local impact. This is the #CUDifference: care for community and people over profit.

PARTING SHOT

Tristate: Collaboration and Cooperation in Action

You’ve probably heard me mention the Tristate Collaborative over the past few years. I am excited about this collaboration because the work we do together drives value to you.

At its core, Tristate is a practical application of the cooperative principles — done at scale and done right. It brings together the credit union leagues in Minnesota, Montana, and Wisconsin so we can work smarter together without losing what makes each state, each league, and each credit union unique.

And that’s the point.

Tristate isn’t about centralization. It’s about alignment — behind the scenes — so trade associations and credit unions can focus on what they do best.

These three leagues came together based on shared values, common purpose, and high trust. Our collaborative work revolves around three clear value drivers:

Bringing Value.

Tristate helps trade associations deliver more relevant, vetted products, services, education, and partners to credit unions. By pooling insight, experience, and due diligence, leagues can raise the bar on what shows up in front of members — without adding cost or noise.

Gaining Efficiencies.

No league should have to reinvent the wheel. Tristate reduces duplication across states by sharing expertise, evaluations, and negotiations. That efficiency flows downstream, giving trade associations more capacity and giving credit unions cleaner access to solutions that already make sense.

Driving Revenue.

Scale matters. Tristate strengthens negotiating power and partner relationships, opening new, sustainable non-dues revenue opportunities for trade associations — while helping credit unions access better pricing and better outcomes.

The real win? Everyone stays independent. Governance stays local. Advocacy stays state-focused. Priorities stay aligned with the needs of your credit unions.

Think of Tristate as a strategic extension — quietly supporting trade associations so they can better support credit unions.

That’s collaboration with intent. That’s the cooperative advantage.

Please sign up to hear more from us as new partners, events, and opportunities roll out.

Have a super weekend.

Cooperatively, Gerry
