Advocacy Update

Eddie Black testifying at Legislative Session

Montana Legislative Update: This week at the Montana Legislative Session, Eddie Black from Vocal CU (pictured above) testified in opposition to SB 240, the "Equality in Financial Services Act," which aims to regulate service denials and social credit score discrimination for large banks and payment processors. The credit union community continues to work against this bill. Additionally, Montana's Credit Unions testified in support of SB 200, a bill that strengthens and modernizes cooperative laws by providing greater clarity and enhancing the rights of out-of-state cooperatives. We continue to monitor several bills in anticipation of them dropping soon. Contact Karen if you have any questions or concerns about bills in the Montana legislature.

CU Board Modernization Act Gains Senate Support: At the federal level, the Credit Union Board Modernization Act passed through the House and has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE). This bill would allow well-run credit unions to reduce mandatory board meetings to six times annually, offering more flexibility and reducing regulatory burdens.

Nussle Defends Credit Unions' Tax Status: In a recent op-ed, America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle challenged bank lobbyists' claims and urged Congress to protect credit unions' tax status. Nussle highlighted the unique role of credit unions as financial cooperatives serving communities, not Wall Street, and warned that removing their tax exemption would harm consumers.

Power Up and So Much More! Don’t miss your chance to celebrate Montana’s Credit Unions' 88th Annual Meeting on May 21-22 at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Meet Oklahoma City bombing survivor Amy Downs, who was one of the last survivors to be pulled from the rubble following the bombing that killed 168 people — including 18 of her 33 co-workers at Federal Employees CU. Amy still works for the same credit union as the president and CEO.

PARTING SHOT

2024 Impact Report Coming Soon

What Does Impact Mean to You? We are about to launch our 2024 Impact Report, which highlights the many ways we served you last year (spoiler alert: A LOT!). As I was reflecting on our three pillars — advocacy, education, and collaboration — I kept coming back to my personal motto, “attitude, ability, impact” (there’s that word again). You see, I want to make a difference in the world around me. I want every Montanan to see and feel the credit union difference because of the impact you have in their lives. I want your league to be there every step of the way, equipping you and enabling you to do the amazing work of serving your communities with passion and expertise.

What does impact look like to you? Sound like? Feel like? How does your personal mission support your credit union mission? What does your impact report look like since the beginning of the year? Whose life is better because you stepped in the gap of their challenges to improve their financial picture and offer hope?

Stay tuned next week for more about our mutual impact!

Cooperatively, Gerry
