This week, we commemorated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time dedicated to promoting a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons.
It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, this is a widespread problem. Some instances of elder abuse involve fraud and scams specifically targeting seniors. In other cases, caregivers are not providing basic necessities such as food or appropriate medication.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of our senior citizens is a top priority for my Office. Our Elder Fraud Unit investigates and prosecutes financial crimes and schemes that involve the theft of an elderly person’s identity, property, and life savings.
In addition, our Elder Abuse Project is staffed by social workers who provide supportive counseling, at-home visits, and assistance filing for reimbursement for losses and payment of medical bills.
The most important action you can take in honor of Elder Abuse Awareness is to say something if you see something. My Office works hard to safeguard our senior population. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.
