Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This week, we commemorated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time dedicated to promoting a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons.

It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, this is a widespread problem. Some instances of elder abuse involve fraud and scams specifically targeting seniors. In other cases, caregivers are not providing basic necessities such as food or appropriate medication.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our senior citizens is a top priority for my Office. Our Elder Fraud Unit investigates and prosecutes financial crimes and schemes that involve the theft of an elderly person’s identity, property, and life savings.

In addition, our Elder Abuse Project is staffed by social workers who provide supportive counseling, at-home visits, and assistance filing for reimbursement for losses and payment of medical bills.

The most important action you can take in honor of Elder Abuse Awareness is to say something if you see something. My Office works hard to safeguard our senior population. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

Pride Celebration
It was a special privilege to once again host our annual Pride celebration with co-sponsor Councilmember Lynn Schulman and special guest, Daniel Dromm.

During the program, we reflected on the meaning of Pride and the achievements of the LGBTQ+ communities over the past decades. I extend congratulations to the night's honorees:

  • Mr. Matthew Silverstein, long time civic leader and public servant
  • PFLAG, the nation's foremost family-based organization committed to celebrating LGBTQ+ young people
  • ADA Robin Leopold, Bureau Chief in my Office
  • Mr. Ryan Lawless, trial prep assistant in my Office

My Office will continue to support the rights of the LGBTQ+ communities throughout this Borough and City.
Anti-Gun Violence Partnership
In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, which operates one of the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in the City, hosted an event in collaboration with local cure violence organizations - Life Camp, King of Kings, Sheltering Arms/Rock Safe Streets - to help put a stop to gun violence on our streets.

During the event, the Hospital signed a formal partnership with the organizations to work together to prevent violence and assist in protecting the health of patients and community members. This agreement will help save lives, and I am committed to working with every group in this Borough to end the epidemic of gun violence.
Tribute to a Local Hero
We owe Deputy Chief Steven Silks a debt of gratitude for the decades of service - 39 to be exact - he put in with the NYPD in protection of this Borough and City.

Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Silks served in many capacities within the boroughs of Bronx, Brooklyn, and eventually Queens where he was appointed as Chief of Queens Patrol North.

The honorary plaque which now hangs at the entrance of Forest Hills Stadium is a fitting tribute to the life and career of this local hero.
Father's Day Luncheon
It was a pleasure to attend a Father's Day Luncheon in honor of seven distinguished men who are considered Southeast Queens Heroes.

As the District Attorney, I am aware of how important it is to have a strong and supportive father figure or mentor in the lives of our youth, to help put them on a positive path forward and guide them through challenges that they face as they become adults.

I extend my gratitude to every father and father figure for raising your children and providing security and love to your families.
Flag Day
I took the opportunity to commemorate Flag Day with community members and elected officials during a patriotic family event at Forest Hills. This annual tradition reminds us of the freedoms and the rights we enjoy in the U.S.

Thank you to Tony Barsamian and the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation for hosting this important event each year.
Upcoming Town Hall Meetings
My good friend, Assemblymember David Weprin, is hosting two Town Hall meetings for members of the Richmond Hill and Fresh Meadows communities.

A number of city agencies and departments will be on-site to answer any concerns you may have regarding your neighborhood. Please see the flyer below for additional details.
