Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Every week I update you on the gangs we prosecute, the guns we get off the streets and the human traffickers we send to prison. In addition, we hold accountable to the fullest extent of the law those who would tragically abuse our pets.

We secured an indictment this week against a Forest Hills man accused of repeatedly physically abusing his female Boston Terrier puppy, Espy.

Between September 2022 -- when the dog was just 10 weeks old -- through November 2022, the defendant made multiple trips to an area veterinarian who treated Espy for a variety of unexplained ailments, including a suspected traumatic brain injury.

At 16 weeks old, the defendant took the dog to the same vet, who referred him to an animal hospital. The puppy arrived at the medical facility in critical condition with swelling and bruising to her abdomen and other signs of trauma. The defendant was told there was no guarantee Espy would improve with surgery and the man had the dog euthanized.

A necropsy showed Espy suffered horribly during her short life -- 21 of her 26 ribs had been fractured, more than half were broken in more than one place. The exam showed she suffered from multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

The brutality inflected upon Espy is as sickening as it is heart-wrenching. The defendant will be held to account for the pain and suffering he is alleged to have caused this defenseless creature.

My top priority is to keep all those who live in Queens County safe - including our four-legged, furry residents.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

Center for the Women of New York Gala 2023
I had the pleasure of attending the Center for the Women of New York gala at Fort Totten Park in Bayside last week. The organization advocates for women's equality and promotes education to foster economic independence.

The event honored supporters of women's rights and those in the community who continue to uplift women including state Attorney General Letitia James and former Rep. Thomas Suozzi.

Also honored were Helen Arteaga Landaverde, CEO of Elmhurst Hospital; Danielle Giunta, superintendent of Community Education District 26; Taryn Sacramone, executive director of Queens Theatre; Matthew Symons, Department of Parks & Recreation parks administrator for northeast Queens; and Anna-Marie Vallone, vice president of First Central Savings Bank.

Stopping the Spike in Shoplifting
I joined Mayor Eric Adams as he announced a plan to address the citywide surge in shoplifting. Along with Attorney General Letitia James and my fellow district attorneys, we are diligently working to combat this growing problem.

In Queens alone shoplifting more than doubled between 2018 and 2022. That is why I launched the Merchants Business Improvement Program in Jamaica in 2021. I followed up the success of that program by expanding it to Flushing and, most recently Astoria. See the most recent press release here.

Communities thrive when our local businesses thrive. This office is committed to turning the tide when it comes to shoplifting.
LifeWay Network Honor
I was honored to accept the LifeWay Network's Freedom Award along with Jessica Melton, our Human Trafficking Bureau Chief. The LifeWay Network, which works to create a slavery-free future, recognized our numerous initiatives to combat the scourge of human trafficking and efforts to assist survivors.
