Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Yesterday, I was joined by New York City Police Department Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell in announcing that a 16-year-old former student has been charged with making a terroristic threat, reckless endangerment, and other crimes for allegedly orchestrating a phoned bomb threat to St. Francis Preparatory High School on April 25, 2022.

According to the charges, the defendant went to great lengths to orchestrate an elaborate and realistic threat against the school, soliciting an international accomplice online to phone in the threat and paying in cryptocurrency for services rendered. Following a thorough investigation, the defendant has been apprehended and will be held accountable.

I want to assure you that my Office will use all tools at our disposal to find individuals who think they can commit crimes safely behind their computer screen and bring them to justice. The Cyber Crime Unit in my Office investigates and prosecutes cases that involve technology-facilitated crimes against adults and children. Experienced prosecutors utilize traditional and digital techniques to delve into the virtual world we live in today and ensure justice for all victims of crime.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of a cybercrime, including inappropriate content and predatory behavior, email CyberCrimes@queensda.org or call 718.286.6673. We're here to help.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Hispanic Heritage Celebration
Hispanic and Latino Americans have long contributed to the prosperity of our borough, city and nation. We had a wonderful time paying tribute to members of our communities during our annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration this week.

My Office will not only protect the vibrant diversity of our Borough but celebrate the many accomplishments we've achieved despite facing tremendous challenges.

¡Feliz Mes De La Herencia Hispana!
Pet Adoption
Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting a pet adoption event in Middle Village, facilitated by members of my Animal Cruelty Unit in partnership with the Animal Care Centers of NYC. The event was a big success, and all rescued animals on-site found their forever home!

The safety of our beloved furry companions remains one of the top priorities for my administration. These innocent victims are members of our community and are deserving of protection.
Tribute to a Fallen Hero
Detective Brian P. Simonsen, of the 102nd Police Precinct, was a hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. He was tragically killed in the line of duty in February 2019, and my Office made sure to hold accountable those responsible for his untimely death.

It was an honor to join Det. Simonsen's family and colleagues over the weekend to pay tribute to his life and legacy with a permanent fixture on 118th Street. Thanks to the efforts of Council Member Lynn Schulman, the street is now known as Det. Brian Simonsen Way. May his memory live one forever.
Italian-American Heritage Celebration
I'd like to thank the Federation of Italian Americans of Queens for hosting a festive parade in Astoria on Saturday in celebration of Italian-American Heritage.

Italian Americans have enriched the fabric of Queens and continue to strengthen our local economy. They serve their communities with honor and distinction and embrace their rich heritage in benefit of the next generation of leaders. I look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the people of Queens County.
