Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I joined the Greenburger Center for Social and Criminal Justice this week for the groundbreaking of Hope House, a residential alternative to incarceration that will provide transformative care to offenders suffering from serious mental illness.

There are times when the best course of action is to assess a defendant’s mental health and provide them the help they need to be a contributing member of society, rather than a potential threat to their community continuously cycling in and out of the criminal justice system.

That is why I created the Rehabilitation Programs and Restorative Services Bureau in my office and why we collaborate with each of the specialized court parts to serve those with a mental illness or a substance misuse or co-occurring disorder.

Hope House will offer life-changing programming to eligible men and women in the five boroughs who made serious mistakes, providing them with the help they need in a residential setting with round-the-clock services and on-site security.

Our expectation is that Hope House will serve as a model for future programs and facilities intended to perform critical, interrelated public health and public safety functions.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

Meeting with the Police Commissioner
My executive staff and I met with NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban and First Deputy Commissioner Tania Kinsella this week to discuss our joint efforts and close partnership in ensuring safety while promoting fairness.

I look forward to continuing our work together.
Diwali Celebration
Our annual Diwali celebration was especially joyous this year as the Festival of Lights will now become an official public school holiday in New York City. This is a significant milestone for the South Asian community, and we look forward to celebrating this important holiday with students and families in the years to come.

Thank you New American Voters Association, South Asians of New York, Senator John Liu, Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and Council Members Linda Lee and Shekar Krishnan for partnering with my office to host this year's event. I also want to thank Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado for joining us as a special guest.
Greater Allen AME Cathedral Veterans Reception
The Greater Allen A.M.E Cathedral’s Military Veterans Committee organized a wonderful event last weekend to pay tribute to veterans and current military service members. It was a special privilege to attend as we reflected on the sacrifices made by veterans to protect our freedoms.

I am grateful to all the veterans for their service and pledge to never forget their sacrifices.
Legislative Breakfast at Eagle Academy
Members of my Youth Empowerment Unit attended the recent Legislative and Clergy breakfast hosted by the Eagle Academy in Southeast Queens. The all-male college preparatory school emphasizes character development, brotherhood and community service in an academically rigorous, nurturing environment.

We were able to learn more about their programs and initiatives, and we look forward to exploring ways to work together in the future.
