Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The recent string of subway crime has affected us all and the violence simply must end. There are basic rights that New Yorkers should have in this City, and one of them is the right to safety when commuting to work, using the subway to take our children to school, and knowing we will return home unharmed.

We refuse to compromise on those rights, and I want to assure you that, in Queens, my Office will not tolerate those who choose to rob us of these freedoms. To that end, we have brought attempted murder charges against the defendant accused of shoving a straphanger onto the tracks last Friday. Prior to that, we secured an indictment of manslaughter charges for the defendant accused of punching a fellow commuter, causing him to get hit by an incoming train last Tuesday.

The public transportation system is a vital lifeline for the millions of New Yorkers who depend on it to get around our great city. The ongoing spate of violence is a threat not only to commuters, but to the city’s economic and social vitality. We have had enough and we refuse to give in to the perception of fear these situations have created.

My Office will continue to work with our leaders and law enforcement partners to hold accountable those who choose to disrupt our sense of safety anywhere in this Borough, especially inside the transit system.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Domestic Violence Webinar
Throughout the month of October, we have been keenly focused on raising awareness of domestic violence in our communities.

This week, I hosted a virtual meeting to provide information about service and resources available for victims and survivors. Unfortunately, domestic violence remains severely underreported in Queens County but I am committed to eliminating the stigma attached to being a survivor.

If you missed the live discussion, you may watch the webinar in full by visiting https://youtu.be/GGIDu9UUyXo.
Patrol Borough Queens South Graduates
The NYPD Patrol Borough Queens South hosted an orientation for the recent graduates of the Police Academy and I was invited to speak to the grads about the importance of diligent and conscientious law enforcement work.

I look forward to growing a stronger partnership with this amazing group of talented and eager professionals as they begin their new assignments in the field.
Diwali Celebration
On Tuesday, November 1st, join our in-person Diwali celebration with State Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar at the Richi Rich Palace on Atlantic Avenue in Queens.

The Festival of Lights celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, a fitting tribute to the challenges we continue to overcome together. I hope everyone's festivities were filled with joy and prosperity and I look forward to celebrating once more together!

Youth Programs Kick-Off
This month marked the kick-off meeting for two of our youth programs.

The Queens DA Student Advisory Council grants students the opportunity to discuss the law and current events as well as to enhance their public advocacy skills. The Queens DA Legal Explorers Program is designed to expose high school students to various careers within the legal field. I welcome everyone who has chosen to participate and am excited to witness their progress throughout the semester!

Fall Family Fun Day
It was a pleasure joining Councilmember Nantasha Williams, community members and elected officials for a Fall Family Fun Day at Wayanda Park this past weekend.

Community outreach is an integral part of my administration, which enables the public to better get to know this office as we try to keep individuals out of the criminal justice system. We will continue to work hand in hand with our partners to uplift and empower the people that we serve.
Breast Cancer Walk
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States, with New York having the 12th highest rate of new cases nationally.

In order to raise awareness, my Office partnered with the Queens County Women's Bar Association for a 5K walk against Breast Cancer in Flushing Meadows Corona Park last weekend. We stand together with our law professionals in support of cancer research.
