Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The Merchants Business Improvement Program, created by my office in conjunction with the NYPD and local business owners to combat retail theft and repeat shoplifting, has seen positive results since its launch in 2021. I announced the program's expansion this week to every precinct in Queens.

Piloted in Jamaica, Flushing and Astoria, the initiative focuses on the handful of repeat offenders who continually threaten and harass local shopkeepers and their customers and employees. Participating businesses contact the police when an individual engages in this disruptive behavior. Responding officers can issue a trespass notice warning the individual that their return to the location could result in their arrest.

A total of 142 business locations, from mom-and-pop shops to large chain retailers, participate in the program in the three pilot precincts. Trespass affidavits have been served to 83 individuals, five of whom violated the notices and were arrested.

Businesses owners throughout Queens who are interested in participating can enroll by contacting their local precinct’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers.

With the high rate of retail theft we are seeing throughout the city, it is absolutely essential that we keep fighting back. Expanding this program across the borough is an important part of that fight.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Dragon Boat Festival
The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is an international, multicultural celebration that has become the largest event of its kind in the United States and it takes place right here in Queens, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

I got to enjoy this year's event along with a host of officials, including Mayor Eric Adams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Rep. Grace Meng, Assembly Members Ed Braunstein and Jenifer Rajkumar, Borough President Donovan Richards and Council Member Sandra Ung. Congratulations to Team FDNY for taking first place in the Municipal Cup!
Mt. Moriah AME's Community Event
From its modest beginnings in 1959, Mt. Moriah AME Church has grown to over 5,000 members. I was happy to partner with the church for a back-to-school supplies giveaway for members and residents of Cambria Heights.

Thank you to the church's pastor, Rev. Robert Lowe, for hosting this community event.
DESI Society Family Picnic
The NYPD Desi Society is making strides in building a stronger relationship between the South Asian American officers in the police department and the communities they serve.

I extend my gratitude to Detective Ravi Narayan, the group's president, for inviting me to attend their annual family picnic and connect with the members.
