The Merchants Business Improvement Program, created by my office in conjunction with the NYPD and local business owners to combat retail theft and repeat shoplifting, has seen positive results since its launch in 2021. I announced the program's expansion this week to every precinct in Queens.
Piloted in Jamaica, Flushing and Astoria, the initiative focuses on the handful of repeat offenders who continually threaten and harass local shopkeepers and their customers and employees. Participating businesses contact the police when an individual engages in this disruptive behavior. Responding officers can issue a trespass notice warning the individual that their return to the location could result in their arrest.
A total of 142 business locations, from mom-and-pop shops to large chain retailers, participate in the program in the three pilot precincts. Trespass affidavits have been served to 83 individuals, five of whom violated the notices and were arrested.
Businesses owners throughout Queens who are interested in participating can enroll by contacting their local precinct’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers.
With the high rate of retail theft we are seeing throughout the city, it is absolutely essential that we keep fighting back. Expanding this program across the borough is an important part of that fight.
My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.
