Dear Friends and Neighbors,
My office filed two counts of attempted murder in the first degree against a man who allegedly shot two NYPD officers in East Elmhurst on Monday.

According to the criminal complaint, two NYPD officers and a sergeant attempted to pull the defendant over for driving the wrong way down a one way street on an unregistered motorcycle. During the confrontation, the defendant dismounted and fled the scene. After the officers caught up to him – and tried to place him under arrest – the defendant fired at both of them, shooting Officer Christopher Abreu in the leg and Officer Richard Yarusso in the chest at point blank range.

Thanks to quick medical intervention and a bullet-resistant vest, both officers are recovering from their injuries. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the very real dangers members of law enforcement face while on patrol.

NYPD officers put their lives at risk every day to protect New Yorkers and keep our communities safe. They deserve respect and safety in the line of duty.

We will seek justice for this senseless act of gun violence that could have easily ended in tragedy.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

If you have information regarding the death of Bridget Manderson, who was killed in Whitestone 45 years ago, contact NYPD Crimestoppers by calling 800-577-TIPS, or through the online form.

It is never too late for justice.
Gun Violence Awareness Campaign
We mark National Gun Violence Awareness Month every June by wearing orange to highlight the deep impact such violence has on our communities. My office is laser-focused on reducing gun violence by taking firearms off our streets and preventing tragedies from taking place.

Together with our partners in the community, law enforcement, and violence prevention teams, we will continue to fight this plague in the streets and in the courts.
Welcome to Our Brave Justice Summer Interns
I am delighted to announce the arrival of a new cohort to our Brave Justice summer internship program, representing 22 law schools and 12 colleges.

Over the course of nine weeks, 64 interns will engage in a comprehensive learning experience that includes a visit to the NYPD Training Academy, insightful presentations from various bureaus in my office and invaluable mentorship for their legal careers ahead. This diverse group brings a wealth of perspectives and talents, enriching our program and fostering the next generation of legal professionals.
Pride and Israel Day Parades
This past week provided special opportunities to march in celebration of the rich diversity of this great city.

I first joined the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York for the annual Israel Day Parade along Fifth Avenue and later marched alongside community members and leaders in the Queens Pride and Multicultural Festival in Jackson Heights -- the second oldest and second largest pride parade in New York City.
Father's Day Celebration
I was glad to join the India Home organization for a Father's Day celebration at Cunningham Park, where we expressed our gratitude and appreciation to all fathers and father figures in our lives.

Thank you to India Home for continuing to empower the senior community while preserving the rich traditions of South Asian culture. My office is pleased to work with our community partners to provide valuable resources and support to the seniors throughout the borough.
