Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We all know that drinking and driving is deadly. But, unfortunately, fatal crashes where at least one driver is impaired by alcohol persist at an alarming rate. Each year in this country for the past 25 years, nearly one-third of all fatal crashes have involved drunken drivers.

As District Attorney, too frequently I sit with devastated families whose lives have been shattered by the selfish, irresponsible actions of impaired drivers. I know that we can and must do much more to address the scourge of drunk driving.

In 2013, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a report that recommended lowering the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for driving from .08 percent to .05 percent. But a decade later, only Utah has implemented this standard. No other state has done so even though a .05 limit is the law in nearly 100 countries.

New York should become a leader on this issue. We are not powerless to reduce the number of tragedies caused by intoxicated drivers; we just need the political will to act. I urge all New Yorkers to support common-sense legislation lowering the BAC limit to .05 percent.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Flushing Business Improvement District Initiative
I recently announced that the Flushing Business Improvement District (BID) has joined a pilot project designed by the Queens District Attorney's Office, the NYPD and local business owners to improve public safety and raise public confidence in local shopping areas. The Flushing Merchants Trespass Notice initiative will allow store owners, in collaboration with the NYPD's 109th Precinct, to effectively remove disruptive individuals from their premises. This program follows the successful launch of a similar effort in the Jamaica business district.

The annual Forest Hills Street Fair attracts nearly 120 vendors and thousands of visitors to MacDonald Park for an early taste of spring. These events are excellent opportunities to let the public know about the services my office provides.
