We all know that drinking and driving is deadly. But, unfortunately, fatal crashes where at least one driver is impaired by alcohol persist at an alarming rate. Each year in this country for the past 25 years, nearly one-third of all fatal crashes have involved drunken drivers.
As District Attorney, too frequently I sit with devastated families whose lives have been shattered by the selfish, irresponsible actions of impaired drivers. I know that we can and must do much more to address the scourge of drunk driving.
In 2013, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a report that recommended lowering the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for driving from .08 percent to .05 percent. But a decade later, only Utah has implemented this standard. No other state has done so even though a .05 limit is the law in nearly 100 countries.
My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.
In Friendship,
Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
