Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The long-overdue modernization of the Queens County Supreme Court Criminal Term was unveiled this week.

The upgrades provide an improved experience for everyone who comes through the Kew Gardens courthouse doors, whether as a juror, attorney, defendant or observer.

My office contributed $1.675 million in federal forfeiture funds to upgrade 19 courtrooms, while the work on the other five courtrooms was funded by the Office of Court Administration.

The courtrooms now have high-fidelity video systems that can support in-person proceedings, as well as a combination of in-person and remote participation. Witnesses will be able to use touchscreen monitors during hearings and trials.

An infrared-based assistive listening system has been installed to help the hard-of-hearing or anyone who may have difficulty following court proceedings due to ambient noise.

The improvements aren't just in the courtrooms. There are also new digital display boards in the main lobby of the courthouse that will help visitors find the right courtroom.

Queens leads the way in improvements we hope to see throughout the state.

Every day we must ensure that we minimize obstacles to civic participation and maximize the ability of our court system to function efficiently and fairly. We must always provide justice in a manner that ensures accessibility to all.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

It's Graduation Season
I had the pleasure of speaking to the graduating class of PS 144, the Col Jeromus Remsen School in Forest Hills. I encouraged the fifth graders, who will be moving on to middle school in September, to believe in themselves and strive to do their best.
Street Renaming for Queens Leader
I was happy to join the LeFrak City community and Council Member Francisco Moya and other local leaders as the corner of Junction Boulevard and 57th Avenue was renamed in honor of Barbara Jackson. It was a chance to celebrate Jackson's legacy. She dedicated more than 30 years to representing the people of Corona and, in particular, those residing in LeFrak City.

Jackson served as a long-time Democratic District Leader and was an outspoken, fearless voice for the people of Queens.
The Brandeis Scholarship Breakfast
It was a pleasure to break bread at the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates synagogue for the Brandeis Association Scholarship Fund Brunch. The association awarded several scholarships to Jewish law students in their second and third year of education.

The association also bestowed its prestigious Barry Tivin Community Service Award to synagogue member Adam Orlow for his good work. And retired Judge Jeff Lebowitz was also honored for his judiciary work and contributions to the scholarship fund.
