Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Deed theft isn't new, but it's happening far too often with serious repercussions for those impacted.

With the stroke of a pen or a few taps on a computer, savvy con artists can steal an unsuspecting homeowner's property. These fraudsters tend to target homes that appear to be vacant. They use forged birth certificates or fake licenses to change the deed holder's name in official city records.

One way to combat the problem is to sign up for alerts with ACRIS -- the city's property registration system that will notify homeowners of changes to their records.

Two bureaus in my office -- Frauds and Housing & Worker Protection -- work every day to safeguard people's personal property and bring thieves to justice. Earlier this year, my office was able to secure the return of a home in St. Albans to its rightful owners, a disabled veteran and his family, through the first-ever use of a state law enacted to protect deed fraud victims.

If you suspect that you've been a victim, contact Frauds@queensda.org, HousingWorkerProtection@queensda.org, or call 718.286.6673. We're here to help.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

September 11 Commemoration
Every year on September 11 we are reminded of the horror that fell upon our city. But in the face of darkness, New Yorkers displayed unwavering bravery and inspired our city's resilience.

I joined community members and leaders in Glendale, Howard Beach and Lindenwood for a 9/11 prayer and remembrance over the weekend. While the weight of the tragedy lingers 22 years later, let us never forget that our nation's strength remains unbroken.
Dedication to COVID-19 Victims
Far too many families were unable to have funeral services for their loved ones during the pandemic as our city grappled with COVID-19.

Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels in Forest Hills recently held a dedication ceremony for a new chapel garden in honor of local residents who lost their lives due to COVID-19. The new garden is a beautiful and serene space for reflection and contemplation, and serves as a reminder of the pandemic's impact on our community.
Rosh Hashana Food Distribution
Shanah Tovah to family, friends and neighbors celebrating Rosh Hashana tonight and over the weekend. May the New Year be sweet, healthy and safe!

Queens is proud to have great organizations such as the Met Council, Tomchei Shabbos of Queens and the UJA Federation, which host annual food distribution events for those in need during the holiday season. I was joined by Council Members Lynn Schulman, Sandra Ung, and Linda Lee, and State Senator Joseph Addabbo and other community leaders at this week's High Holiday distribution.

Many thanks to Yitzchok and Aron Katz, Aaron Cyperstein, and Shimi Pelman for their work in the community.
Sikh Cultural Society Parade
The Sikh Cultural Society, Inc. -- Gurudwara -- in Richmond Hill recently held its annual Nagar Kirtan parade to honor the contributions of Sikhs to the borough and beyond.

The Gurudwara, which serves close to 1,000 people every week with daily hot meals, spiritual guidance, and community events, hosts this congregational parade to recognize the efforts of Sikhs in promoting peace, equality, and justice. It was a pleasure to march alongside President Bhupendar Boparai and a number of Gurudwara dignitaries and community members.
Back-to-School Party
Assembly Member Catalina Cruz recently hosted a back-to-school block party in Corona as a day of celebration and unity for local residents. My office was on hand to provide information regarding safety and bullying prevention.
Senior Safety Summit
My office is partnering with the Rochdale Village, Inc. to host a summit on crime prevention for older adults.
