Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The recent shooting incidents on the streets of Queens have left our communities in shock and disbelief. As alleged, a 25-year-old Brooklyn man rode a scooter across two boroughs last Saturday while indiscriminately shooting at innocent pedestrians and motorists, killing an 86-year-old man and injuring three others.

Such scenes of terror will never be allowed stand.

Thanks to the swift action of the NYPD, the suspect has been apprehended and will now be held fully accountable by my office. Charged with murder, attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the defendant faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Gun violence is a public health crisis that’s affecting every part of our country. We all should have the fundamental right to go about our day without fear of senseless shooting incidents that not only kill the innocent, but monumentally alter the lives of survivors, victims' loved ones and everyday citizens.

My office will continue to dedicate all resources at our disposal to seek justice for the victims while working closely with law enforcement and the community to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
