October 1, 2021
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The past few weeks have highlighted serious concerns regarding the present conditions at Rikers Island, including severe overcrowding, delays in the intake process and understaffing.

At a minimum, our city needs to provide humane conditions for those who are detained in our city's jails.

My office continues to work with stakeholders on a daily basis to explore workable solutions. We continue to review the securing orders of those who are being held at Rikers on Queens cases, with an eye toward expediting dispositions, advancing sentences and considering jail alternatives.

Criminal justice reform legislation passed last year, which I support, already makes most non-violent crimes ineligible for bail. As always, however, even if electable, we seek the least restrictive options that will ensure a defendant’s return to court.

Efforts to resolve staffing issues that apparently triggered the current crisis have helped, as has Gov. Hochul’s recent Executive Order expanding the use of virtual court appearances to help alleviate congestion.

Keeping the communities of Queens safe while helping to ensure a humane criminal justice system are the top priorities of my administration.
In Friendship,

Domestic Violence Awareness
October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Noone deserves to suffer the trauma of intimate partner abuse and we must eliminate the stigma attached to being a survivor.

My Domestic Violence Bureau investigates and prosecutes intimate partner violence, including harassment, assault, violations of orders of protection, as well as cases involving strangulation, stalking and attempted murder. The bureau works closely with the Queens Family Justice Center, Safe Horizon, Korean American Family Services Center, and other non-profit organizations to ensure that victims are connected to safety planning and counseling services.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 718.286.4410 for help, day or night. My office and our partner providers can help you obtain services and reclaim your life.

In addition, our Elder Abuse Project provides services for victims of domestic violence who are 60 years or older. Contact 718.286.6562 or ElderAbuse@queensda.org for assistance.
Information Wanted
This past weekend marked 19 years since the death of Romeo Acuna, who was found stabbed to death inside his home in Jackson Heights. Those responsible have yet to answer for this crime.

As part of our weekly call for help, we are asking for any information regarding this incident. Contact NYPD Crimestoppers by calling 800.577.TIPS or submitting an online form. All tips are confidential!
A Day Of Remembrance
On National Day of Remembrance, I joined Where Do We Go From Here, Inc., a local non-profit organization that provides support for families of murder victims.

We continue to honor all the lives we've lost to acts of violence while seeking justice on behalf of those left behind.

It is also important to note that our Crime Victims Advocacy Program continues to provide support to surviving crime victims – including counseling services, assistance navigating the court system and obtaining reimbursement for crime-related expenses, and referrals to a wide number of other services. For more information, call 718.286.6812 or email CVAP@queensda.org.
Vigil for a Beloved Community Member
This Office joined the community in mourning the loss of a public servant, Rita Persaud, who tragically lost her life in a fatal car crash on Christmas Eve of 2020.

The vigil was held by Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and local community leaders following my announcement of an indictment against a Brooklyn resident for the crash.

I joined the solemn occasion to emphasize that we all bear a responsibility on our shared roadways. Rules of the road exist to protect everyone and they are not mere suggestions - they are laws. The alleged actions of the defendant in this case caused heartache and grief and he will be held accountable in our judicial system.
100 Suits Expansion
I was thrilled for the opportunity to attend the grand opening of Kevin Livingston's 100 Suits for 100 Men organization, which addresses the needs of underprivileged men and women in the New York City area. This organization has grown into a prominent community-based institution and is now a part of the City's Crisis Management System.

We look forward to our continued partnership to ensure public safety and provide meaningful resources to the Queens communities.
