Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This week, I wrote an editorial for the New York Law Journal on the importance of strengthening our State's animal cruelty laws to better defend our society’s most voiceless members.

In my time as district attorney for Queens County of New York, I have encountered countless cases involving cruel acts against innocent and defenseless animals.

Unfortunately, New York’s criminal statutes currently treat those who damage property more harshly than those who commit brutal acts of violence against these sentient beings who feel pain and suffer distress much in the same way as humans do. It is time to correct this imbalance and hold those who abuse animals fully accountable for their heinous actions.

In my office, there is a dedicated Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. The unit collaborates with law enforcement, veterinarians and pathologists, animal welfare organizations, psychologists, and social workers as a comprehensive, multifaceted approach to combating animal abuse.

We need to recognize the seriousness of animal cruelty crimes by allocating appropriate penalties for these violent acts and enact new stronger laws to protect these defenseless and voiceless victims. Doing so will not only protect our animals but will combat the oftentimes impending violence against humans as well. Violence should not be accepted in any form.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
Select Cases of Interest
  • Queens teenager charged with assault as a hate crime for attack on public bus
  • Queens man sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexually abusing seven-year-old girl he babysat for three years
  • Elmont man convicted for March 2020 attempted murder of his wife following a jury trial
Illegal Waste Hauling
I joined Mayor Eric Adams, the NYC Business Integrity Commission (BIC) and the Inspector General for The Port Authority in announcing arrests related to unlawful waste hauling activity at JKF Airport.

The regulation of our city’s commercial waste hauling industry prevents corruption and criminality from seeping into a vital service market. Those who attempt to skirt the law by operating without registering with the BIC, or operating despite a denial of a registration application, will face criminal charges for compromising public safety.
Kupferberg Holocaust Center
Learning and understanding the lessons of the Holocaust ensures that we will not permit the dangers of prejudice and hatred to take hold ever again. It also provides a foundation to better identify warning signs that can indicate the potential for hate-based violence.

A group of our Brave Justice summer interns recently toured the Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College, where my Hate Crimes Bureau Chief and I spoke about the importance of combatting and preventing such crimes.
Information Wanted
I am committed to holding accountable those who perpetuate bias-motivated attacks on the residents of Queens County.

We are seeking any information regarding the two incidents described below that are being investigated as hate crimes by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force in collaboration with my Office. If you have any information, I urge you to contact NYPD Crimestoppers. All tips are confidential and can be submitted anonymously!
DESI Senior Center Visit
As part of our continued efforts to raise awareness of elder fraud and abuse, members of my Community Engagement Bureau visited the DESI senior center in Jamaica, Queens to share crime prevention information.

The Community Engagement team assists in keeping this Office acutely aware of issues as they arise in Queens communities.

If your organization can benefit from an informational visit from members of my staff, don't hesitate to reach out by contacting CommunityEngagement@queensda.org or calling 718.286.6764. (Note, there was an error in the listed email address in last week's newsletter)
