Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This week's gang takedown was perhaps the largest ever in Queens: a 151-count indictment brought against 33 alleged gang members, five of whom are charged with murder.

At the center of the indictment is a blood feud between rival Southeast Queens street gangs. Set off by a slashing in April 2019, the tensions and violence between the warring factions escalated after the murder of 14-year-old Aamir Griffin in October 2019.

Griffin was playing basketball at the Baisley Park Houses when he was gunned down by a gang member who mistook him for a rival.

After Griffin's murder, there were more than 20 shootings, one fatal. Some 34 firearms were recovered through this investigation.

Whether it is a 14-year-old like Aamir Griffin playing basketball with friends, or a schoolteacher walking his dog, or a mother running out to buy milk for her children -- all innocent bystanders in deadly shootings in Queens -- we have seen law-abiding New Yorkers peacefully going about their business killed by mindless gang violence.

We will do absolutely everything we can to get illegal firearms off of our streets.
We will not let lawlessness and fear take over our neighborhoods, parks and streets.

Anyone willing to jeopardize the lives of their neighbors with deadly gun violence is put on notice. Every resource of this office will be used to identify and prosecute these cases and to get these weapons off our streets.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Chinese Christian Herald Crusades Elder Fraud Presentation
Scams targeting seniors and recent immigrants for their hard-earned savings and property cost victims millions of dollars each year. I visited Chinese Christian Herald Crusades in Flushing with members of my Elder Fraud Unit to present strategies seniors can use to identify these schemes and avoid becoming targets. The Elder Fraud Unit has been instrumental in prosecuting these financial crimes and securing restitution through the courts.
