With car thieves and those stealing auto parts like catalytic converters, tires and even air bags getting more brazen, my Auto Crime Unit is working tirelessly to protect your property from these criminals.
The unit works with police precincts to strengthen cases against the individuals committing these crimes and hold them accountable. We are also partnering with the NYPD to help car owners prevent catalytic converter theft by etching a unique serial number and scannable QR code into the auto part. This visible ID number can thwart would-be thieves and help police identify the rightful owner if they are stolen and later recovered.
The NYPD suggests putting an Apple AirTag or Tile tracker in your car so that police can trace it if it's stolen.
There are other things you can do to prevent being victimized:
- Never leave your car running or leave your keys inside the vehicle.
- Be very cautious when buying cars online. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Don't take the bait. If you buy a stolen car, it will be seized and you could be out thousands of dollars.
- Never buy a car from someone who cannot give you all the paperwork, such as the car's title.
My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.
