Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Later this morning, I will attend the funeral of NYPD Officer Jason Rivera at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Officer Rivera and his partner, Officer Wilbert Mora, lost their lives in the line of duty after responding to a domestic disturbance call.

It is impossible to adequately express the depth of the pain and sorrow their deaths have caused. By all accounts, they were two fine young men motivated by the desire to serve and protect their community.

Across the city, too many families have been devastated by senseless acts of gun violence.

The continued wave of heartache may seem insurmountable but it is important to reject the idea that current levels of gun violence are a new normal.

We must continue to work together – our police, our district attorneys, our courts, our elected officials, our mental health professionals, our communities – to address the scope and complexity of this problem.

My Office remains steadfast in our efforts to investigate and prosecute those who bring guns into our County, while working in partnership with our communities to keep guns out of the hands of our young people.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
In The Courts
  • Jury convicts Queens man of murder in stabbing death of his pregnant girlfriend
  • Queens defendant sentenced to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for killing man in 2017
  • Manhattan resident convicted of robbery and aggravated harassment in hate crime attack on man in train station in 2020
Honoring the Fallen
The outpouring of grief and support following the loss of our two brave heroes has reverberated across the Borough.

Members of my staff attended a candlelight vigil in honor of NYPD Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, hosted by the Sikh Cultural Society Gurudwara in Richmond Hill.

May they forever rest in peace.
Addressing Community-Police Relations
The Eastern Queens Alliance, a federation of civic organizations in Southeast Queens, hosted its first Community-Police Relations Forum this week.

During the forum, I discussed the ways in which my Office is building relationships with those who live and work in this Borough.
Asking For Information
Today marks the somber five year anniversary since the death of Efrain Vargas, who was found stabbed to death inside his apartment in Woodhaven, Queens. Those responsible have yet to answer for this crime.

As part of our weekly call for help, we are asking for any information regarding this case. Please contact NYPD Crimestoppers by calling 800-577-TIPS or submitting an online form.
Supporting Our Students
We all have a role to play in supporting our City's students with attaining the skills they need to become the next generation of leaders in our communities.

I was happy to visit Townsend Harris High School this week to conduct the official opening of their Bridge Year Program. This Program allows current students the opportunity to earn credits at Queens College during the fourth year.
Speaking to the Bay Terrace Community
Although I wish we were able to meet safely in person, I am still grateful for the opportunity to virtually speak to members of the community during monthly meetings.

This week, I had the pleasure of speaking to the Bay Terrace Community Alliance about the work of my Office to stymie the flow of guns into our Borough, take dangerous drugs off our streets, protect consumers from fraudulent activity, and empower our youth to make good choices.
Working with the Queens Jewish Community Council
The Queens Jewish Community Council and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards held a breakfast at Queens College to welcome Israel's newly appointed Consul General to New York, Asaf Zamir.

My Office has had a great relationship with Deputy Consul General Israel Nitzan and I look forward to continuing our work together with Consul General Zamir to ensure the safety of all our Jewish friends and neighbors.
