Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Viktoria Nasyrova was sentenced to 21 years in prison earlier this week for poisoning a Queens woman with cheesecake and attempting to steal her identity. A jury convicted Nasyrova in February on attempted murder and other charges in the brazen attempt to kill Olga Tsvyk with the tainted dessert.

Nasyrova wanted to claim the victim's identity in order to stay in this country and avoid extradition to her homeland to face serious charges.

While this case attracted worldwide attention, it was by no means a slam dunk. Nasyrova meticulously staged the scene in Ms. Tsvyk's apartment to make it appear as if she had overdosed. And the first laboratory tests showed no signs of potential poisoning.

My team did outstanding work. They brought modern technology and testing to bear on a case built with old-fashioned detective work, persistence and patience. In the end, it took multi-agency cooperation with federal and local law enforcement to get justice for the victim and put a very dangerous woman away for a long time.

Justice must prevail over evil to keep the world from descending into complete chaos. That is what makes victories like this so important and satisfying. They provide hope, optimism and a reason to believe.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

How to Safely Use Lithium-Ion Batteries
An e-bike sparked a massive fire in an Astoria family's home this month, killing two of their five children. More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze. Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are increasing throughout the city. There have been five deaths this year and 52 injuries caused by such incidents. We must take precautions to prevent another tragedy from occurring.

The FDNY warns that improperly stored or charged devices with lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite rapidly. The devices should never be left unattended or plugged in to charge for extended periods of time. Do not leave these devices near doors or windows blocking your exit or next to flammable materials like couches, curtains or pillows that could ignite. Check that devices have been tested by UL (Underwriters Laboratory) and only use the original manufacturer's cords and batteries made specifically for the device.
Eid al-Fitr
During this month of Ramadan, many people of Muslim faith have fasted each day between dawn and sunset, gathering for evening meals with community called iftar, and ending with Eid al-Fitr. I was happy to visit the first Queens Community Iftar in Jamaica earlier this week, which was co-sponsored by several local organizations and elected officials. I also attended the Jackson Heights Bangladesh Business Association annual Ramadan Iftar. Eid Mubarak!
