Blast from the Past - 8020 East Street
| |
Christina, Mary & Nicholas Roos c. 1905
|
Front view of house with two porches and parlor window
Grandchildren Clara and Matilda
Nicholas Roos was born in Germany in 1845. In 1874 he married Mary Wagner, who was born in Johnsburg. The 1880 census shows them farming in Stacyville, Iowa with three children: Mary, (1875-1942), John, (1876-1947), & Catherine, (1879-1962). In 1881 they made their way back to Johnsburg where three or four more children were born, including Anna, (1884-1966) and Christina, (1885-1935).
Finally, we find them at 8020 East Street (which was called Hasse Street back then) in the 1910 census. Nick was working as an accountant and the full house also included two now grown daughters, Christina and Mary, and Mary’s two children, Clara & Matilda (Mary’s husband, Fredrick Traver had died). Also in the household was grandson Harold age 1 & 1/2, who was the son of their son John.
It is unclear if John (Cocky), was living in the house at that time. But he does show up in the 1920 census living there with his mother and son. His father Nicholas had died a year earlier in 1919. In 1921 Cocky ran a tavern at 7709 Blivin Street where his sister Anna’s husband, John Karls, previously ran a general store.
Around town, his tavern was a known as a speakeasy, and in 1927 he was charged with a prohibition violation. His mother Mary died in 1928 and the 1930 census shows Cocky living with his sister and brother-in-law in their house two doors down from the tavern. We don’t know what happened to Harry and it appears 8020 East Street may have been sold after Mary’s death. (Cocky himself died at the age of 71 in 1947. He went to his room as usual one night but early the next morning they found the light still on and Cocky fully clothed, dead as a door nail. An inquest determined he died of a heart attack.)
The house at 8020 East Street looks a lot like the Nulk’s house at 8014 East Street, but without the bay window on the first floor. 8020 East Street retains more of its circa 1901 exterior style. While the railings were added to the porches after the original photo, they still look vintage, along with what looks like the original columns and gingerbread corbels. The original parlor window with decorative stained glass at the top is also still intact. The chimney is gone and what looks like a diagonal downspout on the sidewall, but the house is still retains most of its charm and is being well cared for.
