Blast from the Past - 8104 Blivin Street

Early photo of 8104 Blivin with possibly the Moss family

1908 photo with James and Emily Foulk - note bicycle on porch

Current view of 8104 Blivin Street

Math and Anna Lay lived there for many years

Due to its location next to the old Methodist Church, 8104 Blivin housed clergy over the years, like Reverend Len & Joey Schoenherr and Reverend White, but mostly families lived there. Warren (Colby) Cole Moss and his wife Isabelle (Jennie) Neish lived at 8104 Blivin Street from about 1900 -1908. Colby held the positions of Spring Grove village trustee and constable and also tax collector for Burton Township. Jennie was a correspondent for the McHenry Plaindealer, sending news from Spring Grove to be published in the newspaper “in an able manner”. In 1899 she was in the lead for winning a Plaindealer bicycle.

In 1908, James and Emily Price Foulk moved in. James was the Spring Grove railroad station agent and telegraph operator for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad. They were the parents of three boys, including Lawrence, who was born the year the photo above was taken. They didn't stay at 8104 Blivin for long but moved into 7615 Blivin Street, next to the train station.

Mathias (Math) & Anna Lay probably lived there next, from 1909 until the late 1930s. Math sold hardware at the Weber & Lay General Store at 1928 Main Street from 1907-1927. Needing more space for his wares, he purchased Jake Freund’s hardware store at 1919 Main Street in 1927 and stayed in business for at least ten more years. He held the office of village trustee from 1909 - 1913.

Around 1945, the Charles Gillespie family lived in the house and Mrs. Gillespie enjoyed hosting the 500 Card Club with games, refreshments and prizes. In November 1953, Joe Pittges and family purchased the home from them. Joe was the brother of Mary Nimsgern who lived on Main Street and he and his family visited Spring Grove often, coming from Chicago. But, only four months later, in March 1954, they sold the home to their nephew, Arthur Nimsgern, and moved back to Chicago. Art owned Sunnyside Heating and Cooling which was located at 7711 Blivin Street, in the area of town once called Sunnyside from 1952-1982. He was a village trustee for over 30 years, from 1956-1987.

In the late 1980s, the Nimsgerns sold the house to Scott and Julie Barrettsmith. Scott graduated from the Moody Bible Institute in 1990, so once again there was a clergyman living in the house. In 1998, after ministering at various locations, he started the Spring Grove Bible Fellowship in the old Methodist Church next door. In 2006, he moved his church to a new location on Wilmot Road and in 2020, Pastor Barrettsmith retired and merged his ministry with the River Ridge Church. Today, he and Julie still enjoy life at 8104 Blivin Street.

The porch has been screened-in, a picture window added, and the gable-end decorative bracket is missing, but the cornice on the upstairs window hasn’t changed and the home still has a welcoming vintage charm.
