Village Recycling Event
The Village of Spring Grove has set up multiple recycling events throughout 2023, our next one will be Saturday, July 15 at the Village of Spring Grove Municipal Centre in conjunction with our Farmers Market.
It is estimated that 85% of all clothing and textiles ends up in landfills in the U.S. today. With the goal of increasing recycling in mind, Helping Hands Recycling Center collects unwanted textiles in an attempt to divert millions of pounds of clothing from landfills. They will collect nearly everything you want to get rid of, click the flyer for acceptable items, or click to our website for the flyer.
Please note that the Helping Hands Recycling Center is not associated with our local food pantry, Helping Hands Food pantry. Please do not drop off items to be recycled at Helping Hands Food Pantry.

A Message from the 4th of July Committee
Thank you to everyone who attended Bella Cain on July 3rd at Horse Fair Park! What a turnout! Bella Cain really brought the party thanks to our Premier Band Sponsors Ray Auto Group/Ray Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Scot Forge.
Thank you to all the sponsors who donated to the Fireworks Fund, the Pistakee Fireworks crew really impressed this year! All of the alcohol sales and parking fees helped fund the Fireworks show, so thank you for hydrating with us and parking in our lots.
Finally, thank you to our Committee, Spring Grove Public Works and all of the Volunteers who signed up to help and those individuals who didn't hesitate to jump in when help was needed!
The 4th of July Committee is a small, all-volunteer committee. This event has grown a lot in the last couple of years and more help is needed on the day of the events and coordinating prior to the event, please email us at sg4thofjuly@gmail.com if you would like to join us.

Blast from the Past - July 1938 Flood
| |
A Spring Grove bridge washed away.
Main Street, still gravel, and the fish hatchery
Spring Grovers may not have been in a celebratory mood on Monday, July 4, 1938.
On Thursday, June 30, rain began falling steadily in the afternoon and increased in intensity until it “reached cloudburst proportions” late that evening and into Friday and Saturday, July 2. The Richmond dam, that had been repaired the previous year from rain damage, could not hold back the force of the raging water again and gave way. (The McHenry dam held out, but the dam at Wilmot broke Saturday morning which caused the Fox river to rise two feet that day.)
Many places were closed to travel due to flooding and gravel farm roads being washed away. Only one road was open to Spring Grove. Travelers were advised to take Route 173 to “Bower’s Corner” (Winn Road), and then south to Spring Grove. Corn crops were badly damaged and grain throughout the region was as “flat as a pancake”.
Thirteen bridges in McHenry County had been either completely demolished or seriously damaged. Greenwood Township had four, including one where the Nippersink tore out a bridge which stood 20 feet above the normal level of the water. Burton Township had two, including a Spring Grove bridge, which was washed away. The fish hatchery flooded, and swirling waters undermined sections of the railroad tracks in town, “leaving holes large enough for a man to crawl through”.
By Monday and Tuesday, the floodwaters, creeks and rivers were receding, and the soaked fields, homes and gardens started to dry out. But despite the inclement weather, the 4th of July carnival in McHenry drew thousands on Sunday and the Monday night fireworks display went on as planned.
