Blast from the Past - 8021 Blivin Street
| |
8021 Blivin Street in 1947
House in 1947 with a c. 1935 car in driveway
8021 Blivin Street in 2023
Side view with garage but the car is long gone
In 1917 Paul & Emma Willams sold 8021 Blivin Street to widower John Rauen, one of the Rauen brothers who owned the tavern next door. Then in 1920, John moved with his son, Arthur, who was 10, to South Blivin Street to live with his mother, Gertrude, 85, his brother Joe.
John sold the house to Paul & Ella Siegler for $2,500. Paul was the manager of the Tibbitts-Cameron lumberyard which was once located on Hatchery Road. In 1933 Siegler retired because of ill health. He died a year and a half later of a fatal heart attack. Ella lived on in the house until October 14, 1947, when she sold the house to Frank & Mamie Tinney.
The Tinney’s were from Chicago where Frank worked as a firefighter. If you know about the Eastland disaster in Chicago, Frank was one of many who received a commendation for his rescue efforts of many people. The Tinney’s married in 1917 and during the Depression in the 1930s, they brewed beer and root beer to sell that was stored in their basement. In 1926 they bought their first home, but on June 1944 they had to sell it because it was in the path of the new Kennedy Expressway. After spending one year in Twin Lakes, they moved to 8021 Blivin Street.
They were surprised Ella Seigler didn’t have a key to the house, but no one locked their doors in Spring Grove back then. As we learned last week, in 1951 the Tinney’s bought the house next door at 8101 Blivin, and, after remodeling it, moved into it.
That year, their son, Frank built the workshop/garage that still stands in the back of 8021 Blivin. He used the shop for his electrical business and the house was kept as a rental. Several families lived there, the Browns, Theresa White and her four children, and Fred and Evelyn May and their five children. When both Frank and Mamie died, both houses were sold to settle the estate. On November 20, 1986, the house was sold to Mike and Jackie Hagi for $53,000. The Hagi’s owned Main Street Foods at 1928 Main Street and an auto repair shop next door to it and kept the house as a rental.
Missing details like the original diamond pattern shingle siding and attic window on the gable end were sided over, and the house lost a certain amount of character, personality and charm. The same happens when old windows are replaced with smaller sizes like second story windows seem to be. One of the foot-tall pine trees planted in front of the house in the 1940s has survived, surprisingly, and now towers over the house.
