Blast from the Past - 1912 Main Street

Happy Wagner was born in 1894 | |
When Otto Hasse, from last week’s story, developed his O. Hasse’s addition in 1901, the NW corner lot at the new East Street and old Main Street was the lot he chose for himself: 1912 Main Street. Interestingly, there was a house already here, which he moved “to the back of the street to rent”, which probably meant North Street.
He built his new home in 1902. This was the year that “wonderful changes” were being made in the appearance of the village because of the new railroad. Spring Grove, like all other inland villages, “was without hopes of ever occupying a very large space on the map of Illinois” without the railroad, according to the newspaper. Luckily, the townspeople made improvements of “substantial nature bound to stick”, not overdoing or rushing things like “western mining towns out west” which often became ghost towns or “dead cities” as the reporter called them.
The Hasse family moved in 1910 and Frank Wagner purchased the house. It would be another 8 years before electricity was installed in town and another 31 years before the street in front of their house was paved. Frank was village president from 1928-1949. He and his wife Mary lived in the house for 46 years, until 1956, raising five children, two daughters and three boys, including their first child, Michael “Happy”, who must have had the same disposition as his father, who was described as having a pleasant and jolly manner. They saw the rise and fall of Spring Grove during the depression, and years after, and might be pleasantly surprised to see how the village survived, prospered, and still keeps improving.
